I'm a type 2 diabetic treated with Insulin. In the past year or two my health has deteriorated rapidly and was wondering if anything could be linked to my Diabetes as the doctors just don't seem to know very much at all!! I have put on a considerable amount of weight even though I eat healthily and exercise, I suffer stomach pains, have lymph nodes, have lost a great amount of power, if I were to get on the floor or fall I couldn't get myself up, I'm only 39!!! I suffer badly too with Psoriasis on my feet and scalp and now high blood pressure!!! Could any of these be linked? I'd be very grateful of any input anyone can offer as I am fast losing faith in the NHS. Through all this my BS levels are relatively normal! Heyelp!!!!

i would definately see a different gp,
there are many things that it could be,
have u had your thyroid checked for starters?
i really would push to see someone else if u arent happy

I'm sorry you are having a hard time
what kind of BG numbers are you getting?
some of your symptoms could be caused by high blood sugars. Weight gain is often a result of using insulin. In fact the medics should warn any T2s who are going on to it that insulin does this. Some oral medications do too.
you are young and should have a chance at good health. As already said, ask to see someone else.

Thanks for replying. Though I realise that insulin or high bloods can cause some of these symptoms I'd be surprised if that were the case. Sugars are 'perfect' according to my local diabetic hospital but I have now pushed to be seen by a diabetic clininc too. As for weight gain a stone or two at worst was to be expected but its now nearer 10 stone gain, never skinny before, though the gain doesn't show too much amazingly! I eat and exercise regularly yet seem now to retain fluids badly. I have managed to get my gp to refer me for a second opinion on some of my health issues but wanted to be a little 'in the know' with things they might well put to me to be the cause which probably in reality aren't if you understand me, have had alot of doctors in the past blame my diabetes for everything pretty much all bar the weather!

thyroid can cause weight gain, so id ask for that, i cant really say about anything else as it could be loads of things and im not qualified to say :?

Sorry meant to say thyroid is fine, regularly anaemic if that has any bearing though have loads of iron in my diet. Gun anyone??? Hahahaha

Hi amber,

What did your clinic mean by 'perfect' blood sugars? I'm curious because my GP used to say the same thing to me but it was only when I really looked into it that I discovered they were anything but. Do you know your HbA1c and your typical daily bg readings?

All the best,

fergus

Anaemia is unlikely to be a cause of trouble, much more likely to be a consequence of something else being wrong. the cause should be checked.

My average bg reading per day is 9 which seems a little high to me but Insulin was prescribed accordingly. Dietician deemed nothing wrong with my diet too. I do know that inactivity raises the readings and I have been slower with pain and general feeling of yuk but as I say I do exercise regularly so really don't think it should be this bad. Forgot to mention that I am currently on prescribed Morphine for the pain though not sure that'd have much bearing. Suffer dizziness but appreciate that probably is due to the high blood pressure. Seems the more I type the more I remember and must come across as a right hypercondriac (or however its spelt!) but really I'm not! 6 months ago I was able to work as a full time carer but now can barely get my own butt off the sofa due to weakness on bad days!Is there a vet in the house?

have you considered M.E? - may account for you feeling very tired and lethargic alot?

i would seek a new GP and list ALL your symptoms regardless if you think your a hypochondriac (which im sure your not):)

i would aim to get sugars down another peg or two maybe aim for 7 if possible, my diabetes team say aiming between 5-9 is a good range

...but im type1, however you are needing insulin so this may apply to you aswell but aiming for midway to me seems good enough for me as i find im hypo'ing alot lately, but everybody's different :)

and i would also keep a record of all symptoms you get and times they occur to find any pattern which could be helpful,

i hope your health improves and you get to the bottom of it :)

You should discuss with your doctor about some of the side effects of Morphine as there may well be a bearing on some of your symptoms. For instance morphine can have an effect on your blood pressure.

Hi Amber,
You're so young to be coping with such lousy health. Have you or your doctors any idea why you're regularly anaemic- do you have heavy periods for instance, and what insulins are you on?
Jus

I used to suffer badly with heavy periods and have infact been diagnosed with fibroids which have remained untreated but have since had a Marina?? coil fitted which has completely changed my cycle to barely existent at all! I'm on Novorapid 3 times a day and Lantus at night. Have had a fair few hypo's lately but theres no real pattern as to why. I hadn't considered M E though was beginning to wonder if it was a muscle deterioration complaint. As for the anaemia I treat it when advised with Iron pills via my GP, and for a month or so I'm fine and my readings are normal then it deteriorates again. To be fair I think I have reached the situation with my GP that he just has no idea anymore and is clutching at straws!

Hi Amber,
I thought you were on Lantus, you're describing some of the side-effects that many people suffer from.
Do some research on this forum, google, and please contact the IDDT (insulin dependent diabetes trust) http://www.iddtinternational.org/ It might be linked, it might not, I'd definately get your lymph nodes checked out to rule anything else out.
A previous poster mentioned ME. Symptoms of ME / Fibromyalgia are almost identical to the side-effects of Lantus; including muscle & joint pain, foggy-head, poor memory and cognitive dysfunction. Fluid retention, anaemia and sleep disturbances are also reported. As are digestive problems, weight gain, unusual overwhelming tiredness, and a feeling of being poisoned. Not to mention unpredictable, erratic BG control.
If you can't find a pattern and have ruled out other causes, please consider changing to another basal insulin. It's worth a try if you're feeling so bad.
Are you on a large dose of Lantus? I've noticed on this forum that people on larger doses seem to suffer more.
Jus :)

Hi Amber,
As a relative newbie I can't offer any help or advice but am just sending you a hug. :)
