Healthy eating classes

I am currently in the process of setting up a business running healthy eating classes and would like some feedback on the need for a class for diabetics. I have a degree in food and nutrition having worked for several years giving dietary advice in a health food shop I have realised a need for advice on food and recipes for many people diagnosed with gluten intolerance, candida, high cholesterol etc. Also people aiming to lose or gain weight. I will be running day classes from my kitchen which will cover dietary advice, cookery demonstrations and some hands on experience.
Although I am not a diabetic myself I have several family members with Type I and Type II diabetes and I am fully aware of the dietary restrictions but would also like the oppertunity to show people the possibilities.
I look forward to your comments.

Hi Kate,

I think anything that encourages diabetic to improve their understanding of foods, cookery, and the effects upon blood sugar levels would be a tremendous benefit to many patients.

There is a slight qualification, however! Many of us on this forum have discovered for themselves or through the experience of others, that much of the conventional wisdom currently dispensed via the NHS and DUK is a little misguided. I'm being diplomatic here, by the way.

There might be something to be said for a conversation about food and its impact on blood sugar so that many of these issues could be addressed?

Take a look around the forum and you'll find many intersting posts on the subject.

All the best,

fergus

hi Kate - i run these kind of workshops so a word of caution - u need to consider risk assessment, insurance etc - I have written protocols for them and it is a legal minefield. I am guessing u are not a dietitian so u may not have prof insurance - u need it because if someone got food poisening they wouls hang u out to dry. I am not trying to be a kill joy but it is important u consider all of this - as a dietitian I get professional back up - u probably dont. Email me if u want a chat.

I have run loads of cooking classes with athletes and on a project in south wales.

If your looking for a business opportunity you could consider aiming something at children. My daughter had a christmas present to go to a professional kitchen in London and cook a three course meal.....she loved it. I'm sure cookery aimed at children would take off, alternatively aimed at parents of recently diagnosed. I would have jumped at the chance, for any help and suport, especially as I feel that my daughters diet is less healthy since diagnosis.

Are you still running cookery classes in South Wales? If yes who are they aimed at? Is it just Athletes ...I deffinatly wouldn't desribe myself as an athelete. Unless we class racing to school to do Insulin Injections at lunch time a sport. Then I would definatly qualify.

at the mo ment no - finding a venue is very difficult.

however it is something i am thinking about - are u in south wales?

Yes. In Cwmbran. A few years ago I looked into setting up cookery sessions for teenagers/ care leavers as I am a qualified youth and community worker, but gave up as I couldn't find a location. Obviously now my focus as changed as our whole life seems to be diabetic centred.

running these things is a bit of a minefield - alot of red tape. Most is common sense but these u cannot take any chances. I like doing them - esp with the development squads - u have to be quite strict!

Thanks for your comments, I am currently looking into insurance and I can see it is going to be difficult to sort out. I have got my advanced food hygiene certificate and environmental health have already given my kitchen the go ahead to do the classes. Can you recommend any good insurance companies?

Thank you for your advice. I will definately look into this. It will probably depend upon whether I can get insurance to run classes for children, if not the classes for parents would be a good option. I will let you know when I am up and running, although it might be a bit far for you to come as I am based in Lancashire.
Kate :)
