Heart pounding

Hi,

I've been (on and off) on the ketogenic diet for weeks now, which does give me a lot better control on blood sugar. However, the thing puts me off is everytime while my body is into Ketosis, my heart also starts to pound harder and quicker and my blood pressure goes up. This usually happens in the later morning, afternoon and night while all of eaten carbs are used up and body goes into Ketosis, soon after I feed myself again (with carbs in the meal), the heart beating starts to calm down, so is the blood pressure.

I've been to the GP and get myself checked out on ECG which didn't find anything significantly wrong. I've also searched Internet, which says it might be caused by potassium deficiency, caffeine or even artificial sweetners.

I'm wondering if anybody has had the similar problem and solved it could share their experience ?

Thanks,

Kelvin

Might be unrelated but......do you smoke ?

I had a large Cigar one night and my BP soared to 196/120 and I felt like I was about to die. My heart was pounding and I was sweating like the proverbial and just generally felt so ill. I thought I would need to go to A&E that night. I haven't smoked one of those particular Cigar's since.

Caffeine might also be a culprit....too much can have many similar effects as you described. It could be down to many things including stress etc. If your Doc didn't find anything then hopefully it isn't down to much. If it was me I would go back and discuss this all with the GP or another Dr in the Practice.

Hi Ken,

I was a smoker but quitted ever since my diabetes was diagonsed in this January... I would love to see my GP, but I believe he will just blame low-carbs diet for everything. About two months ago, I sufferred from low abdominal pain and after I was cleared from UTI test, he let me wait for another month before ordering a ultrasound scan. In fact, this time, I doubt if he will ever get me another test after ECG but asking me to be off low-carbs diet and sending me straight back home.

Cheers,

Kelvin

Perhaps if you make up a food diary detailing everything you do eat on your low carb diet and show it to this doctor it MAY change his mind!

A lot of doctors think of low carb as the Atkins diet and disprove strongly. Showing him that you eat plenty fruit and veg etc and that the low carb is helping to control your blood sugar levels MAY help to get round him.

Also may be worth seeing a dietician to check that you are not missing something vital from your diet that is causing this.

Alternative might be to change your doctor to a more sympathetic one !

Hi Kelvin,

Just a suggestion, but I know that a pounding heart can be a symptom of stress, and also associated with anxiety/panic attacks, stress can be a difficult thing to recognise, as often people are in self-denial . Should you think that this could be the case with yourself, please mention it to your gp.
