Hi,
I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 21 years and have never really properly controlled my diabetes...until recently. I went to see a Ophthalmic specialist a couple of weeks ago and he advised I have exudative maculopathy....I think this is leakage very near my retina, he is reluctant to perform laser surgery as it is so near my retina and there is a high chance of permanent damage to the eye. His advice of tightening my control of my diabetes has really kick started me into leading a much healthier lifestyle and lowering my sugars. His advice was to follow a low GI diet and also take regular exercise. My last HbA1C was 7.7, my HDL 1.88 and LDL 2.0

I very rarely see my doctor, last time was about a year and a half ago, I have reviews with my diabetic nurse who is very helpful but I do feel I should get more advice on diet, lifestyle etc.

I have just come across this site and happy to see it has some good info on.

I look forward to receiving any advice!!

Hi lizzie31,
Welcome to the forum.
There are plenty of Type 1's here who use the GI diet and I am sure they will be along to advise you.

Catherine.

Hello lizzie31 and welcome to the forum. :D

This is a good place to come and learn and ask questions - there is normally someone around happy to help. 8)

Hi Lizzie. I'm T 2, and I follow the Glycaemic Load eating plan. It's based on the GI principle but the GL actually calculates the GI of the amount of food you eat. I've lost 2 1/2 stones since Christmas and it's now beginning to show. I know I'll never be a size 8 but it's better than nothing. Good Luck!! :D

don't you get a regular annual retinal scan?
The Macular region of the retina is the part where the image is formed and I can see why some doctors may be reluctant to "zap" there, however, if you have an actively exuding site, it will do significant damage. Ask to be referred. This needs dealing with

Thanks Sue for the advice on the Glycaemic Load eating plan, I will look into and well done on the weight loss :D

Hanna, thanks for your note, I went to see a eye specialist and he feels that laser may do more damage than good so is very keen on me to try and reverse the condition by significantly improving my health and blood sugars....I am certainly trying to turn my life around and become very focused on controlling my health. :P
