Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is paul I'm 34 and i am a newly diagnosed type 2 (i think) diabetic..

I have been trying to control my diabetes by diet alone and apart from running quickly out of ideas for interesting meals, i am also starting to feel the tiredness creeping back again..

I would like some help from someone, anyone who can help me to understand why i am feeling tired again.. i haven't eaten anything high in sugar and i am keeping fat as far away from my diet as possible ie.. skinless chicken breast cooked in the oven with herbs and spices, turkey fillets done in the same way, tuna steaks (fresh) cooked in a dry griddle pan with light herbs and lemon juice etc, accompanied by sweet potatoes, fresh brocolli carrots peas cabbage parsnips etc and small amounts of new potatoes and other starchy carbs..

I have had some noodles which i have made in to stir fry with normal vegetables (not stir fry mixes) and adding a small amount of hoi sin or black bean sauce..

I am drinking only flavoured waters which have no sugar or carbs in them and have not had a sweet or chocolate pass my lips in over a month (a new serious record for me!) :D

for desserts i have replaced all the junk with fresh fruit portions and low fat low sugar yoghurt (not the thick and creamy type!)
I did start to feel much better after the initial change in diet, however for the last few days i have found that the tiredness is creeping back, i have also experienced some mild pains in my calf muscles recently.. :?

I do not sleep much, but then again i never have.I also work permanent nights as a driver..
My exercise level is very low, mainly due to feeling tired and work commitments.
what am i doing wrong? how can i get back to feeling more energetic again?

any help or advice from anyone with experience of diabetes will be received with extreme gratitude!

Hello Paul and welcome to the forum :)

You probably need to tweak your diet a bit more and also need to self test before you eat and two hours afterwards. If you do this you can see what your food is doing to your body otherwise you will never know.

We need to cut out sugar but it is not the be all and end all. Many of us on the forum have found that the starchy carbohydrates, which we are told to eat, are the very things which shoot our bg levels through the roof. Carbohydrates convert 100% to glucose and since diabetes is a failure of the pancreas to deal with glucose will obviously cause great problems for us. Personally I cannot touch bread, pasta, noodles, rice, bread, parsnips, potatoes, porridge and even pulses so I no longer eat them and many others are the same.

I don’t really trouble too much about the fats although I don’t eat very much but I do enjoy crisply grilled streaky bacon and other meats which have fat naturally running through it and I use butter, coconut oil and olive oil. I eat eggs and cheeses freely but sensibly. Fat mixed with carbohydrates, things like cakes, biscuits and pastry, are even worse for me so I don’t eat those either. Fruit I seem to be able to tolerate in small amounts.

We are all different and you need to test how food affects you.

You would benefit from having a book like the Collins gem Carb Counter which will give you an overview of the values in a vast array of foods and will help you keep good diet control. A food diary with the bg readings from your meter will give you an overall picture so that you can plan what you eat and work out your portions.

Let us know how you get on. :)
