Hi, im recently diagnosed with diabetes but havent been told my type yet. as far as i recall my symptoms started around 2 months ago when i developed an insatiable thirst for sugary drinks, i was drinking between 8 and 12 cans each night over a 2-4 hour period, then i started going to the toilet all the time, my wife (a nurse) said i need to get my blood checked, i ignored her of course until i noticed id lost a stone in a very short period, so i got my blood checked at work and it was 18.8, i called my gp who arranged blood and urine tests, my urine was pure sugar (still is) and my hbac01 thingy was 101. my gp started me on metformin, this is now my third week on it and my bg levels are still hitting 18-20 although they are coming down in between to around 13.5, my fear is that i read high bg readings if consistent can cause organ damage, my gp said not to bother about it but im getting anxious not knowing my type. i have been feeling overly tired and sick lately but yesterday i nearly collapsed twice and was very dizzy and ill for hours, my bg at the time was 16.5, is my gp right or should there be something being done quicker to make sure im on the right medication.

hi by the way.

Hi,

I'm sorry that you are being left in the dark - it must be very worrying.

I'm a Type 1 but I don't know much about diagnosis; as I remember the key difference is whether you have GAD antibodies present; if you have those you are Type 1 or Type 1.5 if you don't you are Type 2. Most people are Type 2. Have you had that test done?

Google the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 diagnosis.

You are right that your blood sugars and your HbA1c are far too high.

I would pressure your GP to make a firm diagnosis, because if you are Type 1 you can get seriously ill seriously quickly. Tomorrow go to the largest chemist near you and buy (£5) some keto sticks which you pee on. If you have high levels of ketones go to A&E. If that is the situation then your pancreas is not producing enough or any insulin.

Other than that you need to stop eating sugar and starch of all kinds; that means no bread, pasta, rice, cereals, or the like.

I hope you get a proper handle on it soon. This forum is a great resource - read up and ask as many questions as you want

Hi, thanks for the reply, I don't think I've had that test yet but I do have Combur test strips for urine and they don't show ketones just some protein and LOTS of sugar. I'm seeing the dr again on Tuesday so hopefully I'll get more info.

Would agree with what Dillinger says. I am Type 2 like most people are if they are over 40 and even just a bit overweight. The confusion (without knowing your age and weight) is you say you have lost a stone which is Type 1 indicator rather than Type 2. The other symptoms you mention are equally applicable to both. Just to add to the confusion the lack of ketone's would likely indicate Type 2

Try cutting out sugar including lots of fruit and fruit juice plus drastically cut down on starchy foods like rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, cereals and flour based products as all those will make your levels high. Replace with more meat, eggs fish and especially veg. See if your levels begin a gradual but steady fall. If they do its more likely Type 2 in my non professional opinion but apart from the loss of weight your symptoms are near nigh on identical to what mine were six months ago and changing to that no sugar much reduced starchy foods diet has got my levels back to normal in a couple of months but of course I have to stick to it or else they'd just rise again.

Two tests can be done to get a definitive answer a c-peptide test and a GAD test. I'll warn you if you doc thinks you are T2 you may find it difficult to persuade him to do the tests as they cost a bit. He will probably want to see if you respond to T2 medication and a change of diet first.

Let us all know how you get on and try not to worry too much

Hi, I'm 38 and 14st, I was over 15st a month ago. This time last year I was 16st 4lbs so I joined a gym and gradually lost the weight. It might sound strange but I can't eat fruit as it gives me an itchy sore throat, I've been eating brown bread for snacks cut out sugary and high fat things (not easy for a chocoholic ). I think sometimes I sound like I want to b type 1 but im just wanting to be sure I'm getting the right treatment, I'm on 1500mg of Metformin a day now and it doesn't seem to be stabilising

Hi,

Best of luck getting to grips with the proper information you should be receiving from Doctors etc;

I notice that you get a itchy sore throat when eating fruit, this sounds like a Oral Allergy which surely must not help whats going on with your health situation. ( does your doctor know about this :?: )

I also agree with Dillinger and hope everything makes sense soon.

Roy :)
