Hello and what a really great and supportive forum.

I have been coming here for about a month now, since my brother was diagnosed as type2 and decided to join. Thank you so much for all your rational and very sensible support - it is so, so helpful to me and in turn I hope, helpful for him.

I have been reading about your successes with a low carb diet... that's brilliant! Unfortunately and due to many complications, my brother will need to go on a low fat, low salt as well as low sugar diet hence unable to do the low carbs at this point.

I look forward to meeting you... and thank you all so much again for all your support :)

Hi Molly.
Welcome.

I noted your comment about Low Carbs. You do not have to do an Atkins type diet to low carb ?

I use a combination of Low GI, Low Fat, Low Salt,Low Sugar and last but not least a Low or Reduced Carbohydrate Diet. This due to Cardiac concerns. Works great for me as evidenced by a loss of 3 stones in as many months and very tight control of Bg levels now. Must be doing something right ?

Please ask questions if you wish.
Ken.

hya molly,
a big welcome to the forum for u and your brother :D

Thank you for your warm welcomes... and thank you Ken, WOW that is impressive! I will seriously look into it... we could all do with loosing some weight too... is your diet filling? My brother has a ravenous appetite :(

Hi Molly.

Yes it is very filling. Any new Diet you need to be motivated and set yourself goals. That is the key thing. Don't get disheartened if things don't start happening overnight.

I certainly don't feel the need to snack and have large meals at all. Just reduce the carbs, give it a try and see. I have to avoid most Breads, Potato, Rice, Pasta and certain Root Veg. Sounds awful I know but you soon get used to it and I don't miss them at all. There are alternatives. Just occasionally I sneak a Spud or two, or slice of Bread. Keep it quiet......!

hi molly, what a great sister you are. i have a great sister called molly too! she is a real blessing. i joined this forum last night although i was diagnosed five months ago - still diet and exercise only.. like your brother i am on the low sugar fat and salt diet. so far i have lost 19lbs and my hba1c is 6.2 and due to statins chol down to 4.1. i swim a bit and do aqua aerobics. this helps - but i love carbs and have porridge oatcakes pasta etc. weight loss has slowed down so i need to look again at amount of carbs.
i am a widow of 62. my husband died aged 49 of type 1 complications. he never came to terms with having diabetes. never talked about it either. i do talk to supportive friends and god (i am a christian) and this helps but i have found it all a huge shock. i fullfilled a lifelong dream and did an art degree when i was widowed and i have had many lovely travels and made new friends and love to paint now. life was great with five adorable grandchildren.made a new start then so looking on this as a chance to get healthy. all best wishes to you and your brother. maisiesgranny
