Hi everybody,

I've been viewing these forums for the past year and thought it was about time I joined I don't know any other diabetics so I feel I need to speak with fellow diabetics, a little moral support goes a long way I feel.

My name is Kate I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last July aged 26 had diabetic ketoacidosis after collapsing after having bloods taken due to me complaining to the GP about suffering from such a dry mouth, diabetes was the last thing I thought I would ever be diagnosed with was admitted to hospital. The next day the blood test results had come back diagnosed with hyperthyroidism too.

After a year in I feel I was doing ok about a month back but the past few weeks I feel like it's gotten out of control again and I just feel so down. I'm using the libre currently which is amazing but i'm just struggling so much. I need to gain weight so I've been told to eat more carbs and just basically eat more because I've been too careful. With me increasing food intake I have been taking more insulin but my blood sugar seems to be all over the place at the moment. I've just taken my blood sugar before and it's 15.6 currently I don't know what's going on? This has been happening for the past few days my readings a few weeks back were like 9 or 10 before bed. Just unsure what's going on?

Does anybody have any suggestions what could be happening? Spoke with dietician today she said see how I go over the weekend and we'll look at things next week.

Sorry to ramble on I find great comfort in reading that i'm not alone with diabetes and we all face these situations day in day out.

Hello, I can't help but just wanted to welcome you onto the forum and send you a hug.

Hi Kate - like Guzzler I'm a type 2 and don't have much to offer in advice. I remember posting for the first time and wondering if anyone will reply...It's late and I expect some experienced T1's will be on in the morning with some observations.
This is a great site with a friendly supportive community so I expect someone will be able to help.
In the meantime well done for taking the step to reach out, sleep well and I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi @Kate26, Sorry to hear you are battling against the tide !
Perhaps could you tell us a little about what your current insulin therapy, diet (carbs, protein etc per meal or snack), and what you do to correct high BSLs.? That way people can get a better handle on things and help you better.
I assume your thyroid medication is keeping your thyroid test results in range.
In general terms, the usual first thoughts I have are about: ( and these are my thoughts, not professional advice or opinion):
- injections sites where injecting into the same spot or area may adversely affect the absorption of insulin from that area
- stress due to worry, are brewing infection (cough, cold, urine infection, sinus or skin infection,. cycles)
- insulin degradation in heat - the drug information pamphlet with your prescribed insulin(s) states that insulin is to be stored for stability until expiry date at between 2 and 8 degrees C, but that a current in-use ampoule. pen etc can be kept outside the fridge fo 30 days, provided it does not freeze or be exposed to temperatures > 30 degrees C.
So you may wish to think whether at recent batch your insulin might have frozen in the fridge or been left out for enough time to reach above 8 degrees C, or an ampoule/pen in current use has been left in a car and been heated up in the sun etc. If you think any of the above apply do may need to avoid that insulin and if you have no 'trustworthy' insulin available you would need to contact your pharmacist and doctor urgently.
For any point above please discuss with your DSN or doctor.
Best Wishes. Looking forward to your post.

Hi @Kate26 and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I can't help with your question as I'm Type 2, but I expect more T1s will be along soon.

Hi Kate. Try changing your insulin cartridge or pen. I think I just have fried mine leaving it in the car last week. Ran in teens all weekend, couldn't get numbers down and felt really grumpy. Changed both cartridges last night and today I'm running at my normal levels.
