hi julie, welcome

im afraid you already know the answers you seek :(
if you want to control your diabetes and your weight, you will also have to control your diet, if you are ready to do that there are many folks doing that here, happy to share there methods but eating the sweets in the evening will not work for you, so you have to choose the right path to follow, it isnt easy but you have it within yourself to make the changes, only you can do it

best of luck

i would say many of us are or were exactly like you, i know i was but sounds like i was far far worse, sweets were an appetisser i didnt even consider as eating, if i wasnt in pain afterwards i hadnt eaten, i was a total junk food addict the sweet stuff was just the tip of the iceberg, for me the only way i would ever had changed my habits was fear, which is exactly what i got on the day of dx luckily that was enough for me, the fear of complications and i hope to god i can maintain the fear and stick with the program (low carbing is my chosen method). and i passionatly believe that is the way forward for most people

Hi Julie, I am new too...to the site, diabetes AND Metformin. I also need to lose weight and get control but - apart from kicking the sweeties etc on the head and adopting a healthier diet - not quite sure where I go from here....looks like we are on the same path.
