Hi Jenny,

Sorry to hear how lousy you are feeling. Did they run a full blood test on u as in checking c-peptide and checking for antibodies? Many many people are getting diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when really they are late onset type 1. Although you say ur overweight, which would suggest type 2, you aren't as old as most type 2 diabetics as they usually say 40+. Also, the fact u have lost a substantial amount of weight and have been placed onto a substantial amount of medication but still don't see much improvement with ur BG indicates there might be something else going on? Usually ketones are not present in type 2 either so I would say its worth looking into... I would ask for full bloods done if they haven't already done that for you.

Hello everyone

I have just found out two weeks ago that I have type 2 diabetes and I have my first visit with the diabetic nurse on Thursday and I have had letters to go to a one day diabetic course and then one to go and have a eye test I am finding it veery difficult to come to terms with I have a great supportive husband but all I feel is anger and lost and lonely at the moment is this normal!!!!!!

I'm not a doctor or anything but u might have type 1.5 or LADA as some call it.

It kind of overlaps both types. U can get ketones like type 1 but u can also have a certain amount of resistance like type 2. Your beta cells are being destroyed by your immune system, like type 1, but you still do produce some insulin,like type 2, but its sometimes not enough and they expect you to eventually progress to being insulin dependent sooner than a type 2 would but not as quick as a type 1 would.... A bad illness or stress is suggested to trigger it but I also think there may be a link with GD aswell but that's just my opinion from people I've spoken to and things I've read.

Some doctors believe it doesn't matter which type u have between type 2 and type 1.5 because treatment would be the same but more experienced specialists have shown that it does matter because if u treat a patient in the way u would treat a type 2 but they actually have type 1.5 you can actually exhaust the remaining beta cells quicker and accelerate the need for insulin dependency.

If you are a type 2 diabetic then losing weight, changing diet and taking medication should definitely produce some sort of results and should definitely be bringing down your BG levels......the fact that this isn't happening with you to any large extent just makes me think there might be more to it than straight forward type 2 but I'm sure all will be revealed with the blood results then you will hopefully get the right treatment to get ur levels right down

Hi. I completely agree with Elaine77. You are quite young to get Type 2 and with rapid weight loss LADA becomes a possibility. It's possible you have a combination of insulin resistance due to being overweight initially together with a poorly performing pancreas for whatever reason. Although in many ways the treatment regimes are similar, Type 2 are assumed to be overweight and insulin resistant and Late onset Type 1 (LADA) will be insulin deficient. Taking pancreas stimulating drugs such as Glimepride (or Gliclazide) in the latter case of T1 will have little effect; might help a bit to start with. I've been thru a similar but much slower process. A c-peptide test can be very useful here. I had one done privately having been classed as T2 and it found my insulin to be very low and predictably I'm finally on insulin injections (thank goodness). Don't worry about insulin if it should be needed. It's nowhere near the hassle I thought it might be.

Hi! I was diagnosed as T1 late in February. I had the drinking and the peeing which I knew we're symptoms, but I also had the leg cramps through the night and I had no idea that was related! It's taken me reading your post to realise that I've not had that since I started the insulin

I had very similar symptons when I was diagnosed. I have no idea what my BG was though as I like many others was told not to test.

However upon finding this forum I began reading and discovered Low carb. It has changed my life and reduced my meds to the point where I think in 2 weeks at my yearly review they may be removed totally.

Previously I was increasing my meds, and warned that soon insulin was the only option left. I used to get leg cramps every night, had recurring thrush, painful knees when walking downstairs,(I live up stairs)tired all the time. I used to take anti inflamatories, painkillers along with 3 metformin a day and 1 pioglitazone a day, and another tablet 3 x a day to counter the effects of the metformin, i would rattle I was taking so many.

I like you am overweight. I have lost 3 stone since low carbing, at a standstill at the mo, but working on it. My BG isn't the best but mostly under 10. Now I take 3 tablets total a day. My knees don't hurt so much and I haven't had leg cramp for months!

Yes you might have the LADA but I would definatley recommend looking into the low carb section on this forum. Most dietician will say eat starchy carbs with every meal, but I as a diabetic can't handle carbs very well. The best thing to do is to monitor your BG before and 2 hours after meals to see what effects they have on you. To start with its best to aim for the 2 hours after food to be no more than 2mmol more than the before food reading. If you aren't given one by your healthcare team then you may need to buy 1. Check the prices of the strips before you decide which one you want as they are expensive.

Hi there Jenny, I can understand your dread of injecting. I was very ill in hospital for a month last November with pancreatitis. I had to have anti clotting injections every night and couldn't bear even to look. A month ago I was diagnosed with diabetes as a result of damage to the pancreas. I am now injecting four times a day and feel confident about it already. I would never have believed it possible. I am neither T1 or T2 but it doesn't make any difference. You will cope with whatever you need to but emotionally it is very hard. Good luck. Anne
