Hi
I am the parent of a 3 year old boy with type 1. He was diagnosed 7 months ago and has been on Humalog mix 25
Under advice from our team, we have swapped over to the basul bolus regime - prompted by a holiday to Orlando that begins next week, and the added flexibility it would give us with meals during flights and how he eats in America.
First couple of days were perfect, but we have struggled today and yesterday with unexpected highs and lows. We are obviously new to carb counting and are treading carefully. He is on 4 units of glargine in the evening which seem to be ok as he is waking with a similar BS reading in the morning as he went to bed with. He is also on 1 unit of Novo Rapid per 20 grams of carbs, which for the first couple of days kept him at about 7.6 constantly - we thought yay!! How easy is this! Then today he has had a couple of readings in the 2's which were unexpected as we were erring on the side of caution with the dose we were giving him.
His before dinner reading was 8.6 and he had an organic pasta ready meal (a rare occasion!) which was 35 grams of carbs, and a mickey mouse ice cream (again rare!) which was 10 grams of carbs - total of 45 grams so I gave him 2 units of Novo. an hour later he had a reading if 2.6. What have I done wrong? Am I missing something or have we just got to settle with the dose and tinker about with it?
His diet is very good - he eats anything and has a very balanced diet - tonights dinner was done by design as the carbs were on the packets meaning no room for me to make a mistake.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Thanks
Christian
