How very daunting to be diagnosed as Type 1 in September 15, at the age of 63,weighing seven and half stone, being active and getting diet and insulin right is the stuff of nightmares. I never knew how complicated it is.

Hello Curly Shirley, welcome. I was diagnosed nearly 19 years ago and this forum has taught me a lot in the last 6 months.

Hi capngrumpy, thanks for your reply, am in dispair with it all at the moment and hope to gain more knowledge from fellow diabetics with more experience. I struggled to get into the forum but managed in the end don't know how.Does managing the food, exercise and insulin ratio settle down eventually, mine is all over the show, mainly high.

The short answer to that is 'yes, but only if you out the effort in', like a lot of things really. And test, test, test to see what food and exercise do to your sugar levels.

Thanks for your reply, am doing my best. testing analysing etc going through loads of strips, glad im not paying for them. At least i haven't drained the nhs until now.

Apologies if you've already been told this, but the first place to start is getting your background (basal) dose right.

There's a good link here:
https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/

and a couple more in the Type 1 Forum stickies section.

And at 63, you've more than likely contributed more than your fair share to tge nhs by now.

Hi and welcome. Do ask all the questions you have in mind. Yes, get the Basal right and then find out the best Bolus ratio (if you have started carb-counting) for you. Some find the ratio needs to change with each meal but I don't find that myself. The right diet most would say is to keep the carbs down and low-GI is best and have enough protein, fat, veg and non-tropical fruit to keep you feeling full. When on insulin your diet can be quite varied but if you go too mad with the carbs you will gain weight. BTW if you don't yet carb-count do ask the DN to explain.

Many thanks for your reply, not carb counting yet, course booked for May. Very much a learning curve, a friend has just mentioned low GI foods so will see what I can have.
