Good evening,
I am a 58 year old overweight lady who has been T2 for about 3 years. I have been on a variety of medications in that time, but now take competact, one of the piaglitazones. I also take valsartan for an originally diagnosed high blood pressure, which now measures at normal these days.

I have read a lot of the postings on this site and am so relieved to find like-minded souls who have gone through similar experiences.

I find my diabetic nurse team show me contempt for what they see as my own fault ie: being overweight and no matter what I say, remain convinced that I eat only burgers and icecream, which could not be further from the truth.

I was widowed earlier this year - and I had spent a year being carer for my late husband who had a very aggressive form of cancer - so my own health was not a priority to me for a while. I also work at home full time at a computer, so I am able to schedule in time at the gym for myself now, usually early in the morning. I have been busy re-building my life and re-starting a social life, but suffer great tiredness and lethargy at times, probably due to imbalance of sugars. I do use the strips, but probably not as frequently or as diligently as I should. Again, reading your posts are motivational to me to be more regular with my testing. I am keen to try the low-carb approach and will re-stock the fridge tomorrow to start this way of eating.

I have trod the path of diet pills (very unpleasant and stop working after a while) and have paid for dietician's advice but nothing has helped weight loss long term, but the sense in what you have all been posting comes over loud and clear, I will give it my best shot.

I also have to travel to USA for work, which I find quite debilitating, as my body doesn't know which way is up, waking up in the middle of the night hungry. When I return, it takes weeks to get back to feeling OK again. Any tips on dealing with jet lag would be most welcome.

Regards to you all,

Hi Fash (if I may be so bold), I just joined today and am feeling my way around.
So sorry to hear about your loss and the way you are being treated. Neuropathy is my major prob. and the work are less than supportive - I'm on part-time work because they were unsympathetic about home working.
Let's hope we can find some friends and help here.

kind regards
James

Hi there fellow sufferer. Misery isnt it? You and I seem to be in the same boat with the bereavement bit, not noticing thet we too were getting ill. I am 12 years older than you but still devatsed to be told I have this, reading the forum is such a help as I dont feel so alone in it now. I have spent a fortune over the years to stand at the scales at weight watchers and be accused of being a liar about my food intake. I am losing nicely now. have cut out ALL sugar and all bread and eating as low carb as possible, But at home alone most of the time it is easier for me than it will be for you having to travel etc.The tablets have played havoc with the nether regions but getting better and I hope to have a good result when I go back to the clinc this Monday which will be after three weeks from original diagnosis

Hope it goes well for you and will watch your progress here, floss

Hi,

As far as I am concerned, as a Type 2, the most important thing is to cut back dramatically on the starchy carbohydrates - i.e. cereal, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. That usually gives a big improvement in blood glucose levels.

Testing is a good idea too so that you can see what different foods do to your blood glucose readings.

Best wishes - John

I'm with Wally/John on the lowered carb advice. It's the ONLY thing that worked for me.
I haven't researched it recently, but from somwhere in a dim an foggy memory, I think I remember that Serotonin is useful in Jet lag. You'll have to research to find if I'm right
Best wishes
Hana
