Hi Guy's,

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Paul and I live in Cheshire. I am 45 and have had Type1 diabetes now for 31 years. It started when I was a lad of just 13 in late February 1978; in fact I spent my 14th Birthday in hospital the following day on March 1st.

I try and look after myself, and I am fortunate that I have a very active job. I work in Horticulture and have been working with plants since leaving school at 16.

I try to keep active when not at work. I enjoy working my dog in the countryside, and also enjoy my hobbies these include.

Birdwatching, Digital Photography, Vintage motoring and Astronomy which is my passion.

I became a supporter of Diabetes UK in the summer of 2009, and only found the forum by accident. I'm pleased that I did. I have a lot of questions to ask, and I hope this is place where I might find the answers.

Cheers.
PaulB.

Hi Paul.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and if you need to, ask any questions you may have. In particular take a look in the Type 1 Diabetes forum area. Lot's of helpful T1's there.

Just to clarify about Diabetes UK. This forum is an offshoot of Diabetes.co.uk and has no links to DUK.

Hi Paul,

I bet you have a few tales to tell being type 1 for the last 31 years. I hope you can share your experiences with us.

One thing we can all be sure of, regardless of the years we have had this condition, we are all still learning and gaining new knowledge. By sharing our experience, be-it good or bad, we can learn from one another and hopefully overcome any misconceptions that are out there.

Hope to see you around and please do join in with discussions.

Regards

Nigel

Thanks Guy's

To answer Nigel's question.

I remember when I was diagnosed with T1 in 78, we all had to use disposable syringes followed by glass syringes, with huge metal needles. I was on Beef Insulin, how many of you remember that!

Then I then went over to Porcine insulin in the early 1980's followed by Human insulin towards the end of the 80's.

I have big problems with HYPOS, which usually happen during the middle of the morning or an hour after my Lantus injection at 3pm.

These HYPOS are not bad ones, but still debilitating. And I have yet to find an answer why they occur; especially following my background insulin injection Lantus at 3pm!
