Hi everyone,

Thought I would introduce myself after signing up a couple of days ago. 40 y/o Essex guy here but living and working in Malaysia. A quick story as to how I arrived here at this forum:

Met up with a friend on Boxing Day for some quiet drinks. 7 pints and a bottle of scotch later I find myself on the side of the road with excruciating pain in my right shoulder. Apparently I was hit by a car but my memory is somewhat blank. Somehow dragged myself to A&E where they confirmed a fracture of the right humerus. Fast forward 6 weeks and I went back to work feeling OK. I had lost some weight but nothing to be alarmed at.

Over the next couple of weeks however I felt continually thirsty and fatigued. I put this down to being very sedentary whilst I was off work. Drank plenty of fluids and started to sneak an extra sugary snack to give myself an energy boost. The weight was still falling off and things were getting worse. One Monday I arrived at work and felt physically ruined. My body felt like I had just run a marathon. I've never experienced that kind of feeling before and knew that something wasn't right. Went straight to my GP who ordered full blood work.

I got a call from him early the net morning demanding to see me ASAP. I went straight to the clinic where he gave me the good news. No HIV or any other nasty stuff but my blood sugar levels were off the charts at 57 mmo/l. He put me on a zero sugar diet and gave me the option of going into hospital or taking oral medication. I was somewhat hesitant about the hospital option as private healthcare here can be very expensive here and I wasn't sure if I was covered so chose the tablets.

Overnight my reading halved and over the next few days continued to slowly fall. It kinda hovered around the 20 mmo/l level and refused to go any lower. That weekend I noticed my vision blurring ever so slightly which was alarming to say the least! Another trip to the GP and he referred me to an endocrinologist. The endo wanted to admit me asap but I had to sort out various work related stuff so agreed to come back the following day to start insulin treatment.

I was in hospital for 48 hours and came out feeling like a changed man. Yes the news that I am now Type 1 diabetic was an obvious blow but I was just so glad to finally know what was causing all the horrible symptoms I was experiencing. My body felt so much better and my appetite returned with a fury. I had lost over 20kg (!) and looked like a prisoner of war.

I am slowly getting to grips with this disease and learning the ins and outs. Mentally I am treating it as a good thing as it has forced me to pay close attention to diet and general wellbeing. I have never been fat (5'10'' / 70kg) and eaten fairly healthily but over the years have neglected exercise. Once I get back to my fighting weight I start on the exercise plan. I have also rediscovered my passion for cooking and really enjoy preparing all my own food now. In fact I think I am slightly obsessed over food. Even as I am eating one meal I am already mentally thinking of the next one. Does anyone else do this??!

Anyway enough rambling. I just wanted to introduce myself and hope to learn from the experts here and in time convey that knowledge to others.

Good luck to all,

Cheers!

Hi and welcome. Good to hear that you are now on insulin which will work well for you. Be aware that too many carbs with insulin can lead to weight gain, so when cooking keep the carbs down and make up with protein and fatty foods. Your insulin will need to be adjusted to match the carbs you do have
