Hello from The Unicorn Lady

Hi everyone,

I am a parent of a T1 girl. She was diagnosed 5 days after her 10th birthday in March 2008. She was severely DKA at diagnosis and was lucky to make it through the night. Quite frankly one of the worst nights and best nights of my life, because I nearly lost my girlie but she fought her way through it all to be here today. Its been a rollercoaster journey for the whole family - not just us as her parents, but also her brother, Grandparents and Aunties and Uncles. We have tried to develop a holisitc approach to diabetes and tried to persuade girlie that she can live a normal life. She just has to watch what she eats and check her sugars. Thats easier said than done, but after having complete control since diagnosis, we've had ups that refuse to come down and we are awaiting puberty.
I'm looking forward to chatting with fellow parents and getting ideas from other T1s about how best to help girlie through this difficult time. She wants a pump and we've set a target of complete control for the beginning of the summer holidays. Now we have to get the nurse to agree, though after her last appointment, I'm not sure that'll happen

Hi,
Obviously none of the other parents have been on here yet so I thought I'd just say hello anyway. I'm a type 1 also but got it at the opposite end of the age spectrum so haven't any experience of diabetes when young. (Though I have a pump which I would hate to give up)

Hi,

My son Steven has had type one for 6 years and he is now 18. The peak age for hormonal upheavals that worsen blood sugar control is 14 in girls and 17 for boys. As you are learning the pubertal hormonal changes make blood sugar control a real challenge and either side of the peak are 2 or 3 years of erratic but generally very high insulin resistance.

hya and welcome,
im type 1 but dont have experience of being a child with it but wanted to welcome u anyway :D
