Hello everyone. I am so happy to have found such a wonderful forum, packed with so much information and helpful members.:)

I live in Spain and am half British, half Spanish. I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and should be starting medication next week. I was quite surprised to have a sudden diagnose because my previous blood tests 6 months ago and a year ago didn't flag high glucose levels. Even the doctor was slightly puzzled. However, I do have high total cholesterol which I control with statins :( and have been taking them since I was 35. I've always had good HDL and low LDL levels (guessing the Mediterranean diet helped with that, but my big problem has been very high Triglycerides (I drink one glass of wine a week so alcohol isn't the cause) which no medication has been able to control. Now I have just got over the initial shock of being diagnosed, it's time to get on a low carb diet, lose weight and learn from this forum and the website.

Welcome, you have indeed come to the right place. Tell us a little more. What sort of readings and test results have you got now? What were they previously? Which meds will you be starting?

Did you know statins can raise the risk of diabetes and blood sugar levels? There’s lots of threads in here about cholesterol and different ways of viewing it. Total carbs doesn’t seem to be worth much at all. Ratios are much more important, although triglycerides do seem to be the baddies of the piece. What sort of figures? Hopefully the new lifestyle will do something for these too.

What sort of foods do you eat now? You indicate a Mediterranean diet so hopefully the changes won’t be too dramatic, unless there’s a lot of carbs sliding in there too.
