Hello, I'm a newbie here and fighting hard to keep of diabetes medication. However, I think I am currently loosing the battle. I have a question....if I eat my dinner by 7.30 pm and then take my blood sugar test after 10 hours....if my sugar level is 7.2 at this time does it indicate that I am diabetic and need to be on medication?

Hi. Do you literally mean 10 hours after 7.30pm? If you do, the test has no value as the liver can dump glucose overnight. Even if you are diabetic don't assume to start with that you will need meds. If you are a potential overweight T2, then moving to a low-carb diet may be all you would need to do. Yes, do get some tests done; the local pharmacy will often do on-the-spot checks which are rough and ready but will highlight blood sugar that is a lot too high

over 7 is diabetic by a lab, not a home test kit which has a +- 20% acceptable error rate
assuming your meter is right, next is to have 75g of sugar and do a home OGTT,

Is there a reason you aren't getting the Dr to do the tests properly?
Hi jack, thanks for your input. I have been fighting this battle for the last 3 1/2 years. my dr in Aust had advised me to loose some weight and try and stay off medication for as long as I can, as I am already on BP medication...something to do with Beta Blockers.

I managed for a long time to keep the sugar level down under 7 but lately, no matter what i eat or don't eat it ends up being in the 7+ range after about 10 hours of eating at night. Currently, I am in India indefinitely and I don't want to go to a doc here...they are took quick in prescribing med here...that is my opinion....hence the struggle to find out if what I am doing is okay or if i should give in and go to a doc here.

i will try what you say about the Glucose tol test. Thanks a lot for your input it is much appreciated.

Thanks Diabell, I think I will take a small something just before going to bed, so that the 10 hr period gets shortened to 8. I am already quite particular about my diet, but I will try harder...I really don't want to go on med. Thanks for your input. It is much appreciated. :)

If it was me I'd take metformin and your Dr is wrong. it's shown to have a better long tern outcome, if drugs are taken as and when indicated and not delayed

Hi,

Have you considered that the beta blockers may be increasing your blood sugars?

I don't know what dosage you are on but I found that by taking half in the morning and half at night, with my GP's consent, stopped my blood sugars increasing.

Thanks Catherine, I don't have beta blockers at the moment only on BP med. I was trying to stay away from med. but one of these days I am going to go and talk to a diabetologist. Thanks for your message.
