Hello - I'm confused!

Hi there, I was invited to the health MOT advised by the NHS and went along for a blood test followed by my results a week later. I was told there was no need to fast before the blood test so had my breakfast before going along. One of the many results was for diabetes and I was told my score was 46 which makes me "pre-diabetes". I have since discovered that the test was for a Hba1c reading. When I have just read about this test there is reference to percentages but not numbers. I was told that if my score exceeded 48 I would have diabetes and if it was less than 42 I would not. The practice leaflet I was given is pretty useless and I have been advised to be tested again in 6 months. My cholesterol readings were a total of 6 broken down to HDL - 1.3 and LDL of 4.3.
Should I be worried and if so - what do you recommend?

Some months ago the units used to express Hba1c changed. They used to be in percentages and now they are bigger numbers. My chart say that the old ones were referred to as DCCT and the new ones IFCC. There is a conversion device elsewhere on this website. I have a chart pinned to my notice board.

Normally I am not required to fast if I am just going in for an Hba1c reading but I am if they are doing cholesterol etc. (triglycerides) so I have no idea what was going on in your case.

Should you worry? No not really although this is a bit of a "heads up" regarding your health. If you are overweight now would be a good time to think about sorting it. If you eat a lot of flour/sugar products you should really cut down on them and if you want to study what is going on in more detail get a meter.

Although your numbers are pretty good they can get worse if you don't take some action.

Hi, thank you very much for the prompt explanation, advice and recommendation. I am overweight - BMI over 34 so will look to go on a diet which I hope will help everything
kind regards
Nikki
