Well done...I absolutely agree. Testing and recording results, at least until you know what to eat personally, is the only way to establish control. The doctor is giving some very impersonal, non-specific, general hymn sheet advice...and then goes home (without diabetes). Of course - some (an increasing number at least) are a hell of a lot more in tune with progress.
 
Well done on giving up smoking and the steady weight loss.
