Hello
I got diagnosed with lada type 1 diabetes in November I radically changed my diet and got good management quickly
I had full bloods and my hc1 test last week during hospital appointment last week
Today I got a positive pregnancy test which was a surprise my question is with it being unplanned as they say where do I go from here? Do I contact my doctors or my diabetic nurse any help gladly appreciated

Hi congratulations on your news. I too had an unplanned pregnancy, and can offer the following advice
1. Get a referral to a diabetic midwife asap. Best way to do this is to speak to your GP, or you could contact the antenatal unit yourself as well, and they can advise on the referral. They should see you within days, not weeks. Both my pregnancies I was seen pretty fast.
2. Begin to test your blood sugar before and after every meal, on waking, and before bed. The targets are strict but don't worry if you don't meet them 100%.
3. Most hospitals run dual clinics where you will be seen by a diabetes midwife and a diabetes consultant in the same clinic. They will usually see you every fortnight during the pregnancy if you are coping ok, or possibly every week if you are struggling or towards the end.
Best of luck with it, it can be a difficult time to manage your diabetes. Tommy's have produced a guide for pregnant diabetics (which I contributed to) so look that up if you want to find out more.

I'd phone your hospital team as soon as you can. They should have a special pregnancy team and a DSN whose expertise is pregnancy. You'll probably be prescribed a higher dose of folic acid. I took 5mg.

Are you on insulin? If so, test and test to keep an eye on your blood sugar. The targets for pregnancy are stricter than normal. Also, watch out for unexpected highs or lows. Pregnancy can cause both of those.

Have a read through some of the threads here too, and ask any questions you like :)

Thank you both I ll call my DNS this morning and the doctors so in covering all bases
I'm on insulin levemir and humalog levels all ok apart from they creep up abit after dinner so will keep eye on that , I already test 7 times a day so will just be more vigilant
I had gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy and was on insulin then but now I'm lada type 1 it's abit of a different ball game
The sickness has already kicked in
Will update later thank you for advice

DNS has emailed going to see her tomorrow at ten and she's asked me to call doctors to get precription for 5mg of folic acid

Excellent news that you're being seen so quickly.

It sounds like your sugars are well-controlled, so that's a very good start :)

Thank you will take a look
I had my habc1 test last Tuesday and it's good at 4.6 my DNS has said will need to come down a little but she ll explain that tomorrow
