Hello there,

My name is Lise, and I have been reading much of your forum this weekend.

I am 35 weeks pregnant with my 4th baby and was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes on Thursday, after a crazy and confusing couple of days!

I'm having a few niggles (Unrelated to diabetes) with this pregnancy, and had a standard antenatal check-up at the hospital on Wed, my urine sample showed 2+ of glucose was present, and this has been the 3rd occaision that gluecose had shown up, so I had a finger prick test done, which was 9.7, I hadn't eaten in about 2.5 hours by then as I'd been waiting around so long at hospital. They had me in for urgent GTT first thing Thur morning, after fasting for 12 hours first. On arrival to hospital, finger prick showed 6.7, had 410ml lucozade and tested again 2 hours later, 9.8. I then had more bloods taken which confirmed the results.

I'm booked in to see several people on Tuesday morning, a dietician, diabetes Dr, and a consultant who deals with pregnant ladies who have diabetes. I've been told to expect to be there several hours!

I'm told this is likely to clear up after my pregnancy, but I am really worried it wont. When I had the GTT within 45 mins, I was shakey, light headed, flush and feeling pretty odd. I had a walk about, fresh air, called my husband, then went back and told the midwife, who sat me in a private room with a fan and encouraged me to lie down, which I didn't want to. I stayed there until the 2 hours passed and next blood was done. I felt AWFUL! Like I might pass out at any minute, but this isn't unusual, it happens once a week or so and has done for years, is that a bad sign?

I'm really worried about the changes I'm going to have to make, I'm quite fussy anyway, with a major sweet tooth and a passion for potatoes! I have also recently gone into the cake making and decorating world and bake on a weekly basis, I cant bare to think about it at the moment!

Sorry to ramble on, I'm sure my poor husband has had enough of me! I've been in a bit of a sulk since Thur, I just want it to be Tues so I can find out exactly whats what, get my test meter and start learning.

Lise :)

Gestational Diabetes is something that needs to be discussed fully with your health care team at all stages. You will get information and help here from other Mum's who have been through it.

Here is a link to some information from this sites Community Pages, they may be of some help till then:

Hello Lise and welcome to the forum. :)

I am afraid that you will need to make some changes so that you can enjoy your pregnancy and have a healthy baby!

If it does clear up after your pregnancy then you would be wise to make permanent any changes in your diet to ensure you minimise the chances of having it permanently in later life, as that would really make you VERY unhappy :!:

In any case you would benefit from following the advice posted by Ken or Sue, the Forum Monitors, for newly diagnosed T2s:

You say that you have a sweet tooth and a passion for potatoes and that could well be part of your problem. We seem to have lost sight of treats being ‘a treat’ and ‘moderation in all things’!

This is a brilliant resource with folk on here happy to help and answer questions – so ask away.

Hope all goes well for you – let us know how you get on. :)

hi lise , i too am a mum of 4, i hope everything goes well for you on tuesday.I think gestational diabetes tends to clear up after you have had the baby, and that babies born to diabetic mothers tend to be bigger, this site is great and im sure you will find loads of great information. You only have 5 weeks until baby is born (i know that feels like a lifetime when you get this far )just listen to the midwife/diatition and diabetic nurse.
good luck
sara

As Forum Monitors the advice we would give is to follow the instructions from your Health Care team at all stages.

The advice that we give out on the forum is general advice for Type 2's and may not be totally suitable for Gestational Diabetes.

Always consult your Health Team before trying anything you may read on the forum.
