Hi, 6 weeks ago my son was taken to hospital he was very lethargic, lost weight, his breathing was very heavy so he got taken to the childrens ward
Was a very scary time, got diagnosed with type 1, we were in hospital 5 days
He's now on lantus and novo rapid
He seems to be coping very well, he tells me to do his finger prick (he's only 4) he is now fine with me injecting him after every meal and he knows he cant have his breakfast till he's had a finger prick and lantus in the morning
Im doing ok with it all, weighing his foods ect
Just thought id pop on anyway cause its good to meet people who are going through the same thing and have someone to talk to :)

Bless his little heart, he's being so good. And welcome to the forum both of you :)
Have a look at the Diabetes Youth Club - that's where the mums post usually.

Hello again mrscookie. I have moved this thread to the Diabetes Youth Club where it will get more attention from the mums and where your other thread is already.

Welcome to the site Mrscookie and am sorry to hear about your little boy.

It sounds like you and your son are doing incredibly well even though it is early days for you both. My son was also 4 on diagnosis so I can understand the stress and strains you are facing. Having said that, when you get to grips with things, life does get back to a different sort of normal and your little boy will be able to do and enjoy everything his friends can - just with a little more planning and organisation on your part.

There are lots of parents on this site who will be able to offer you support, advice or a sounding board when you need to let off steam!

Hi from another Mum! It is always good to hear from other's in the same position. Glad you and your son have quickly settled in to the routine even though it is a steep learning curve and shock at the start.

Hello Mrscookie, welcome from me too :) My daughter was also 4 when she was diagnosed, it was just a few weeks into her first term of reception year. Your son seems to be coping very well, all the best for his first day at big school, it's an exciting time :)

Thanks everyone, im actually really worried about him going out with anyone at the moment aswell, his gran (my mother in law) is a bit pushy with me and my son doesn't want anyone but me doing his injections at the moment, she keeps saying to me you have to be firm with him and tell him he must let me do his injections well i dont want him being destressed while we do it and screaming and crying
Its still early days with it all and to be honest id wish that she would just leave us alone, she was bad when it came to him before cause its her 1st proper granchild, i have 2 more kids but from a previous partner, she treats my youngest different to him and i keep pulling her up on it but nothing ever changes
Do any of you have problems like this lol

Hi,

I think your mother's instincts are right and your son knows whats best for him too. Both yourself and your little boy will need time to adjust to diabetes but in time, he'll be able to do his own injections and manage his blood sugars, insulin doses etc, etc.

Hi another mum,
My daughter was diagnosed last year november aged 4. We were also in hospital for 6 days till she got diagnosed.
Its always the little ones who cope so well. Hope you are both ok.
Sarah
