Hello! I am Tealily and have been a lurker since December 2016, when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It has been about 5 months since and I think it's about time I come out from the shadows and formally introduce myself to everyone here.

Both my parents are diabetic and we have a long family history of it on both sides, hence the news that I am one too didn't hit me that hard. I am of healthy weight with a normal BMI, so I thought I could somehow win the genetic lottery. Alas! Once confirmed during a routine health check, I accepted it and know that a change of lifestyle is imminent.

The first thing I did was to be an informed diabetic, to learn how to manage my health condition and ultimately, as many of you are hopeful here, to reverse it.

My fasting BS level was 12 mmol/l with a H1ac1 of 10.2 when first diagnosed. My doctor didn't give me much information about being a diabetic, just that I was *quite lucky* that my FBS and H1ac1 wasn't that high. What puzzled me was his nonchalant reaction and marking me as being a *quite lucky* diabetic. I have no idea whether a glass of celebratory wine was in order at that moment.

As he wasn't supportive at all in getting me informed about my condition and sent me home with just a prescription (Gliclazide 80mg), I knew I had to take matters into my own hand. So, that was how I found you guys!

Currently, I am on a LCHF diet and slowly transitioning into ketogenic. I've changed meds just early this month to Metformin 500mg/day. Glic gave me bad hypo and yeah, I changed doc too. She is amazing and fully supportive of my LCHF lifestyle. Props to her for agreeing to change my meds too. Luckily, I took to Metformin quite well and only suffer mild gas (the kind that you can actually hold and not stink up a whole room!)

I felt like there are so many things to say but let me just be brief for now. I am just thankful for this site and its members for being a wealth of information. Thank you for helping us understand our condition in depth, thanks for letting us know that a reversal is possible with diet and lifestyle change and thanks for making us feel empowered when healthcare professionals just think of us as one of the statistics. :)

Hi @Tealily .. and welcome
I guess that even as an "informed diabetic" you will still have plenty of questions .. and you are now in the best place to have them answered

Hello and welcome.

Pleased to see you have taken the bull by the horns and been proactive in attempting to control matters. :)

What sort of daily levels are you seeing now?

Welcome .. and how lucky are you to get a doc that accepts LCHF way of eating

Thank you all for the welcome.

@Bluetit1802 : My FBS is normally the highest of the day at an average of 7 or higher at times. It could be the DP and I am still cracking my brain trying to figure it out. PP readings have been hovering around 6 since going strictly LCHF. Aiming to hit the 5s and keep it there for the long term! :) 5 months in and I am hoping I don't suffer from the dreaded burnout anytime soon.

Btw, is there a confession thread in the forum somewhere???? I feel like sometimes when I've been bad, I needed an outlet .... :p

What a brilliant post.

Well done for being so proactive, and changing your doc, doing your own research and making the changes.

:D

Hi @Tealily and welcome to the forum from me too. Now that you have stopped lurking and stepped out from the shadows I hope you will be participating in the forum regularly and keeping us informed of your ongoing progress. :)
