HI im new here

nice to meet you all

found this forum just by chance as i was looking up recipes

i have been border line diabetes for years and years with glucose intolerance and just about 6months ago been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes..but with 2 diabetic parents maybe it was just a time bomb waiting to happen !!

to be honest i havent had much advice from anywhere.my gp has told me to go diet only and i sat down and had a chat with the practise nurse who couldnt even answer many of my questions.she just said i needed to follow the same healthy diet recommended to all and eat what i liked in moderation but in truth my mother doesnt control her diaabtes very well so i was scared to end up like her and i have so far avoided all sugars and all foods with anything more than 4grms sugar in it..

i mean i do cook meals and am careful with the carbs and have veg etc so i dont count that but if a biscuit or whatever has more than 4grms sugar i dont go anywhere near it so i hardly have puddings or cereals except cornflakes or rice crispies..im finding food very boring a lot of the time but only seem to miss it when its this time of year or birthdays and miss out on the treat im too scared to have as i catn take a tablet to help me lower my sugars and have to do it by diet alone

what my doctor calls acceptable is a fasting sugar of between 7.9 and 11 in the morning.i was told if it goes over 15 to go and see them but at those levels its ok for me to stick to diet only but this scares me as it seems too high..im usually about 8 in the morning and 15 after a few hrs of eating

i also suffer from M.E/CFs so i cant always recognise a high sugar time as im often tired and fatigued anyway so i have to just go and see my doctor every few months for more tests to see whats happening.he did say it had come down a little since a few months ago..i also have raised and unusual liver enzyme reslts but they dont know why and again just retest me every few months

is all of this normal for some people especially on the diet only ? thanks for any support and advice xx

ps sorry if i spell bad or sound sily some places its part of me m.e while im typing it to me it seems ok and only when i look back later i can see i used wrong word or misspelt xx sorry

Hi Kukka,

Your doctor's recommended readings do sound to be too high and you ought to try to keep them lower to avoid the quite nasty complications that can come a diabetic's way. Personally, if I was you, to start with, I'd be aiming to get your fasting 'on rising' level below 7 and to certainly be trying to keep away from going into double figures after eating.

The first bit of advice that I give to any Type 2 such as myself is to cut down on the starchy carbohydrate that you eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice etc. That usually leads to a big and quick improvement in blood glucose levels.

Best wishes - John

hya and a warm welcome to the forum,
i too have me/cfs aswell as many other illnesses :D
have a good look around and if youve any questions plz ask :D

Welcome Kukka, I was diagnosed about a year before you and have been on a low carb diet since the start of 2009 losing 2 stone in weight and feeling much more energetic than I had in the past 10 years when I too was borderline diabetic.

My son had CFS for many years. Some of the symptoms of lethargy seem to be similar to those caused by high blood sugar so perhaps in a few months on a new diet you too will be feeling much better with less tiredness.

I hope you can look around the forum and find something to help you here - everyone is supportive.
