Hi everyone

I've been lurking on and off for a while and found the forum to be full of useful information and helpful posts.

I was diagnosed initially in November 2006 and after a lot of discussions, confusion and tests was classified as Type 1.5

The diabetes nurse and my doctor wanted me to go on insulin the first day they saw me because I was 30 years old and underweight. I didn't like this idea, probably partly because I was in a bit of shock and partly because to me it should have been a last resort.

After initially trying Gliclazide which seemed to have no effect I managed for 18 months from eating a no carb diet. My HbA1c after the first 6 months was 5.6.

After 18 months I started taking Metformin 3 times a day and a year later back on Gliclazide twice a day which I'm still not sure makes a difference.

My last three HbA1c tests have been in the 7s but gradually coming down. I think the last one was 7.2.

I've had too many off days over the last few weeks for my liking with 7s (not too bad) and 8s sometimes in the mornings and double figures up to 15s during the day.

A couple of days ago I went to the docs to discuss and as a result have upped my Metformin to 2x 500mg in the morning and 2 x 500mg in the evening. I was thinking I would probably have to start taking insulin (which the doc has been keen on on a number of occasions) but he said there are still plenty of options to try first like the increased dose or different types of tablets.

They took blood yesterday for an HbA1c and the usual extras, cholesterol etc. so I'll see what that says next week.

Anyway that's me. Thought I'd finally say "Hello" :)

Hi eekins.

Welcome to the forum - it is a good place to lurk and also ask questions! :D

With a1c of 5.6, I'm puzzled why you went back on anything. But doubtless there was a reason and I'm so sorry things have got worse when in fact you tried your best. I fear that may happen to me soon. Stick around - people give excellent support here, whatever the circumstances!

Hi Eekins,
your history is a little confusing. It would appear that you were doing well on a low? carb diet and HBA1C of 5.6 and then you were back on meds and HBA1C in the 7's. What happened in between to lead to the rising HBA1C?..

Hi dragongirl

My A1c test prior to going on to Metformin wasn't 5.6. The 5.6 was after the first 6 months which was during the period I was eating no carbs. I started taking Metformin after 18 months. My A1c at that point was 9 (missed that bit out oops). For the following 3 HbA1c tests it was something like 7.7, 7.4, 7.2.

Hi Steve

There wasn't anything in particular that happened other than the no/low carb diet simply wasn't working any more.

The 5.6 was after 6 months of eating literally no carbs (I lived on eggs, meat and cheese basically). I continued this for another 6 months then I couldn't continue because of boredom unsurprisingly. Then I introduced some carbs but still a very low carb diet like 30-50 carbs a day.

Over the next 6 months things just got worse up until the 18 month point when my A1c was measured at 9. So I started taking Metformin. I'm currently still only eating around 75 carbs a day.
