Hello!! My name is Steph, on the 29th Dec 2010 our 8 year old boy was diagnosed type 1 diabetes, the shock is still there but we are coping well and he is not phased at all!! We have had some very low days and not a lot of support from school teachers so thought I would join here to find out how others cope and hopefully to introduce my don to others who are like him.

Hi and welcome to the site.

Those first few months are very hard, but it does get easier over time.

Having good support from the school is vital, so you might want to talk with them about the situation. Perhaps get your DSN to pop in and have a chat with them if this hasn't already happened.

I'm sure you will find this site very informative. There are lots of parents who can help when you need advice and support.

Hi Steph, I'm sorry to hear about your son's recent diagnosis. Children are amazing and often seem to take it in their stride very well.

Some schools seem to be better than others when it comes to supporting families with a diabetic child. Diabetes is fairly uncommon in that not every school will have a diabetic child in their school so it may be up to you to educate the staff about your child's diabetes. Being knowledgeable will empower them to support your child so don't be afraid to educate them. They do have a duty to care however so if you feel they are being obstructive don't be afraid to push for better support.

Thankyou for your comments I some time feel that im constantly hitting brick Walls ! Every time inthink I'm doing the right thing, someone tells me otherwise!! But we ate getting there!!!

Glad you are here Stephen! I was diagnosed at the age of 7 back in the 60's - and trust me - things will get better for both you and your son if you've got a good attitude to the brick hitting the wall (I have a foam brick actually that is very good for tossing when one is pi**ed off at things - no harm is done to drywall, etc.).

Anyway, I've just joined up here. I'm an ex-pat - living in Montreal now - but always having that urge to move on again (think it must be in the blood as an immigrant).

Just know that I went thru' some ups/downs as a kid - and in the end - as I near 1/2 century - I'm doing great. I owe much of that to my Mum and Dad - and they had great patience with me!
