My name is Alison I was diagnosed with type two diabetes last march, I threw myself into losing weight as im very overweight, then in September my son became very ill we almost lost him, thank god that didn't happen, although this sounds weird I was emotionally eating at the time and put the weight id lost back on. now im finding it hard to get back in the swing of things. my daughter got engaged in November and hopes to get married this September and I really want to make her proud by shedding the pounds, can anyone advise me please I feel like im falling into a black hole, want to get the weight off and also get my diabetes under control. HELP.:(

It's a bit harsh but you are the only one that can help you. I liken it to smokers who try to give up by eating gum or sticking patches on. They are not giving up smoking, they are just changing the habit method. They will only succeed when they realise that no more cigarettes or substitutes under any circumstances is the surest answer.

In terms of weight and food, cutting down on carbohydrates has got to be a good option. No sugary drinks and less things made with flour. Find out which mystery supermarket foods are made of flour and sugar. (Clue: they usually don't have bones in or mention an animal).

If able, walk around a bit more.

Most important of all, keep checking how long you have got to meet the September target. Don't try to lose all the weight in the last week.

Good luck.

Hi I'm also loosing weight and I've lost 21 lb by cutting carbs, 98% bread.rice pasta and some root veg. No sugar and sweets and crisps..(I have fresh veg fish fruit ryvita cottage cheese and live yogurt with blueberrys.. Its hard I know you can do it

If you've already tried the various diet clubs without success, you could ask your GP for a referral to a psychotherapist for cognitive behaviour therapy - this is used in eating disorders clinics. You might get a short course if your GP and CCG supports this approach. Poorly controlled T2 might qualify you! Or if it's really deep seated and a longstanding problem, ask to see an eating disorders specialist. I get so fed up with people not taking overeating seriously - it's a killer for diabetics if it causes poor control.

Hi. I agree with the other posters. Do reduce the carbs if you can. Set yourself a daily target of, say, 150gm or even less. Get hold of a meter if you haven't already got one. Using this you can get the blood sugar under control and the weight should follow. If necessary, ask your GP to go onto Metformin tablets if you aren't already on them. These will help reduce the insulin resistance and blood sugar a bit.
