I am a type 2 Diabetic diagnosed in 1995. I have gone from just oral meds and diet controlled to now taking Lantus 34 units/ evening and 24 units/am. I also use a sliding scale novolog with meals.
My BS is not running well and I believe it's due to my hormones being a mess. I am currently, and have been for years, going through pari-menopause and find it more and more difficult to control my BS.
It used to be just the week prior to Menstruation that I would run higher- now it's all over the place. I am becoming more insulin resistant.

Just started cutting out bread and refined sugars, also anything with simple carbs (chips, etc). Basically low carb. But this morning I woke up and my BS was 190. I was shocked as I walked a lot yesterday and ate very low carbs.

It's so nice to have a group to talk to that understands. My family could care less about how hard it is to manage my BS every day- nor do they try to understand Diabetes. I have no support group. Please feel free to give any advice, especially if you are female and a long term Diabetic. I am so weary of the hormone thing!

Hi KPass. Welcome to the forum. Low carb has made a huge differrence to me, but I am not on medication so not sure if it exactly the same for you.
I am guessing from the units you use that you are in the USA? There are a number of international users on the forum but a lot of uk will be working.
There will be plenty of people along soon to give you advice.

Great thanks! Yes I am from the US- in the Midwest and unfortunately don't have access to a good endochronologist in my area. How is the medical care in general in the UK for Diabetics? Is it a matter of which city/town you live in like it is here? In our smaller towns we don't have the population to support an endochronologist. And women's medicine- forget it.

Hi and welcome. Yes, in the UK a lot depends on where you live and how good the local surgery is i.e. whether there is a good GP (physician) and diabetic nurse locally. Normally in the UK it is only T1s that may be referred to the local hospital diabetes clinic which usually is quite skilled with some endos. Your Lantus units seem quite high which implies some insulin resistance so going the low-carb way should help. I'm not sure what you mean by a sliding scale with the Novolog (is that what we call NovoRapid in the UK?). We would call it carb counting if you match the units to the meal carb content; is that what you do?

Yes carb counting is what I call it also. I'm not very scientific when I do it and it is usually too low. I need to up my use of insulin with meals, but I'm hoping with the low carbs I won't have to.

Hiya and welcome. I am newly diagnosed, so can't offer much in the way of advice. I am American as well, but moved to England a few years ago. I am sorry you haven't had a support group. There are a lot of very nice and helpful people on this forum, though, so you have a huge support group now!
