I've just replied to PsychicSal's post, so I thought I'd better introduce myself. I've been lurking on the forum for a couple of weeks.
My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about twelve years ago and was expected to control it with diet. To put it mildly, he has been a non-compliant patient - probably not helped when I poured scorn on the recommendation of the dietician that he ate more pasta. Other than that, I've left him to his own lifestyle choices. We don't eat the same food - I'm pretty much vegetarian and he's a committed carnivore whose idea of eating salad is to have about a tablespoonful, with reluctance.
He had a double heart bypass nine years ago and one of the grafts "failed" early this year. They popped in a stent and sent him home with two carrier bags full of meds. Since then, he's been feeling dreadful. The GP halved his dose of statins but he was still very ill, so last week he went on medicine strike and immediately began to feel much better.
Meanwhile, I'd been researching drug side-effects and learned a lot about statins, which led me to a load of info about diabetes and the LCHF diet. I promptly ordered a couple of glucose meters (his'n hers BG readings, very romantic!) and bullied him into eating very low carb. He was a bit resistant to all the blood testing at first but once he started to see the effect on his readings, he's been a very willing participant.
After a few days off the meds, he decided to take 500mg metformin twice daily and the GP wanted him back on the beta-blocker. However, he has been feeling much better. We went to see the diabetic nurse this morning and his numbers are half what they were last year, so we'll definitely stick with LCHF for now. The GP has scheduled a gradual re-introduction of some of his heart meds, including the statins. I'm really hoping we can get away with the minimum!
It's been less than two weeks and we're still on a steep learning curve but the results are pretty conclusive, though I'm missing my lovely beans and eating a lot more fish than I'd like!
