...........I am waiting for my appt. for a glucose tolerance test on June 9th.
I strongly suspect that I have diabetes 2 because I am always thirsty and feeling altogether very tired.
I went to the GP after experiencing tingling in my hands and being a retired nurse,(took early retirement - I'm 58 ) I was very frightened, so there we have it. :(
My mum and her father had it and so does my brother, so there is a strong family tendency.

I also have weight to lose, ( put loads on after retiring, getting stressed from having Wrinklies - in-laws - to look after ) but after reading about the limit on potatoes, rice, bananas etc. I am loathe to go back to Slimming World as these were a staple and filling part of my diet.

Does anybody have any diet advice for me to start between now and June please ? I don't want to aggravate the situation by eating everything and anything, but June is a long way off.
I would appreciate any comments.

This certainly sounds like a great forum to be involved with, by the way. :)

Welcome to the forum Flo.You will find a lot of contentious threads on this forum about diet.we just love to argue about it on here!
However ,if you want to lose weight and bring down your blood sugar levels and insulin resistance may I suggest that you cut down ,or even cut out the following.Bread ,Potatoes, pasta ,rice and all flour based products. These are all the starchy carbs which convert 100% to glucose in the body and send your blood sugars up.
There is also the low GI approach which you will find is used as well.Basically try and see what works well for you as we are all different in both our approach and tolerant to different foods.
Keep asking us questions, there's always someone with an answer.

Hi Flo and welcome,

June is some way off and if you are concerned about waiting that long you can call in to any branch of Lloyds Pharmacy. They offer a finger-prick blood test service that will tell you how high your blood sugar level is. I suggest that you go first thing in the morning, before eating anything, because this would be a fasting test and therefore more meaningful than a test at any other time of the day would be.
