Hi guys, I'm Lindsey, 33, recently been to the doctors regarding my vitamin d level for a blood test (which was 31 so taking meds) they also checked my hba1c which was 57, I'm in my second week of low gi diet & have a fasting blood test next tuesday, when I asked my doctor if I was diabetic she seemed very vague & didn't explain anything (I didn't even understand or know what the hba1c results meant, I'm struggling a little with family not being very understanding & purposely eating sweet treats in front of me & telling me to just have one but I'm sticking to my guns. Also my mum seems to think that after 3 weeks of no sugar I'll be better & be back to normal.... Keeping my fingers crossed my blood sugar goes down & merry Christmas to anyone who reads my uber long post x

Your hba1c result is an average of the glucose in your blood over the past 3 months. The bad news is that 57 is well into the diabetic range which I think is usually quoted as 48 or over.
More bad news I'm afraid, it's not just sugar that's causing you a problem as ALL carbohydrates turn to glucose in the body. (Sugar is a simple carbohydrate).
Once your doc has confirmed one way or the other you'll be better positioned to make decisions.

Hi Lyndsey. Welcome. Sorry you haven't had a good start. urbanracer is right in what he says. However, once you get your confirmation you'll definitely get the best support and friendly advice from this website, and many resources to help you with your diet and more. Take care and I hope you have a good Christmas. Jan x

Hi. With an HBa1C of 57, I'm afraid that is in itself confirmation of diabetes and a fasting blood test is not as reliable a test. It may however show whether your blood sugar is coming down with the right diet. You are quite young to become diabetic? Can I ask whether your weight is OK or perhaps a bit elevated? Keeping the carbs down will help control the blood sugar

Thank you both, I've cut out most carbs & having the burgen soya & linseed bread, I've always been a huge carb monster & ate lots of pasta, rice & potatoes, I've not eaten any since I went to the doctors.

Daibell, I've lost 1 1/2 stone in the last 4 months but still about 3 stone overweight, I'm hoping the change of diet will bring it down.

Well, that's your new years resolution taken care of.
