I am new to Diabetes.co.uk forum but not to diabetes. I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic when I was 42, I am 50 now and i had gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies - 2nd one was insulin contrrolled for 10 wks. I have recently 'recovered' from depression, not had an anti deprssant for a year past NYE, when my depression was at it's worse my diabetes sufferred big time
my medication kept going up and up and I ended up on 5 x 500mg of metformin, 3 x 80mg gliclazide and 18 units of humalin1 insulin - since May. Last Thursday I went to the diabetic clinic, my HbA1c was 6.7 - had been 9 at my last visit in May
I am a weight watcher and I have lost a stone since Feb, which is fab but far too slooooooooooowwwwww
I mentioned this to my Dr and she told me about the Newcastle Diet, so here I am on day 8! It has been easier than I would ever have imagined, I am having 3 slimfast shakes a day and a 'meal' made of veggies from the list - today I had brocolli soup. My doctor told me last wk to stop all my meds and my BG levels have increased steadily over the last wk  has been 16ish today x I must admit, i feel good, not had any symptoms at all considering my diet, but I was a tad worried, I phoned a diabetic nurse today who said to take a gliclizide with my main meal for a few days....................................... I have followed her advice, will keep u posted on how I am doing. I would be interested to hear from other's who have done the Newcastle Diet.
