Help! A bit confused -

Hi,
My doctor told me today ( after loads of tests to find out why I was always getting ill) that my hc1ab (?) is 6.2 indicating prediabetes, and she is going to start diet etc plan with me in the new year. Although I need to lose weight ( lots) she said that it is 'steroid induced' after being on oral steroid medication for asthma 2 years of the past 4 years, plus regularly from childhood.

My questions to anyone who has a few minutes:
1. Low carb diet - how do I do this on a no dairy, nuts, soya, beans and pulses (severe allergy) diet?
2. I have very poor healing skin ( plus chronic eczema) and incredibly cracked heels - could this be linked?
3. Does anyone have experience of taking steroid tablets ( prednisolone ) while trying to lower levels - I have been told that treating asthma will have to be the priority but the two regimes don't fit well together
4. What effects does stress have? ( very sick daughter)

I have millions of questions but those are the ones I just can't seem to find answers to at the moment!
Thank you

There's a few questions there and although your GP should be working with you on them, I'm sure people here will have advice. Jack was right about the stress. Hopefully, we can work thru them and offer opinions where appropriate.

Feeling for you right now

Hi Jef, you can do low carb without dairy.

Cracked heels is something I associate with low thyroid. As soon as I started meds my heels healed. Do you have other signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism?

You could try to cut out all wheat and rye from your diet as these, particularly wheat, seems to trigger inflammation. Going wheat free can help with asthma. Worth a try I think.

Thank you!
Jack, apparently ( according to doctor) prolonged use of steroid tablets can bring on diabetes as it affects glucose levels ( the doctor apologised and said they should have been checking from my first extended use - I often have them for a month at a time. Thanks for the links, yes I think. Giving up carbs will be hard as looking back there are days when I only eat carbs, no protein.

Mike, thank you, that means a lot.

Totto, thyroid level is fine apparently, until reading all of the stuff on here I hadn't realised how wheat based my current diet is, ( toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, pasta for dinner). Think I will need all the help I can get!!

Means a LOT more to me let me tell you. This is all about support and without this forum, I'd have given up. Totto's given you at least some potential sign on one of your issues.

The wheat / pasta is just not good. Stick with us ... we'll get you thru it or at least put you on the right path

One step at a time My motto and I guess for many others

Hi welcome to the forum.

Here's another link you might like to read, although I realise some of the food choices won't be appropriate for you

My own asthma has improved on a low carb diet (but it was milder than yours to start with). Yes my own feeling is that all of those things could be linked and as Jack says, it costs nothing to try. I so hope it works for you so that you see some improvements somewhere.

Hello and welcome Jet, gosh you have an awful lot going on regarding medical conditions.
As for a change in diet, a good first point is to write down the foods you are eating, possiubly for three days. Then have a good look at the content and then tweak it at first, possibly reducing carbs, if that is the way you want to go.
Many have said, regarding a change of diet, is that one size doesn't fit all. So hopefully you will find the right one for you and you can stick with it.
The library and Google offer a great variety of information as well as members on the forum.

Good luck and all the best

My husband has what his doctor said is steriod induced T2 but he does not have high BG levels and does moderate carbs... ie no sweet stuff rice or pasta and not so much bread as he used to eat...he was a real sandwich addict.. he now has has Burgen Soya and Linseed bread and only a couple of slices a day

Hi and welcome. Steroids are well known for both causing diabetes and increasing blood suagr levels; a big problem. Your problems with certain foods will make it more difficult to do low carb. There are quite a few lactose free foods inclduing my favourite chocolate Green & Blacks 85% Dark which my lactose intolerant grandson also has. Is it possible that some of the problem foods are actually Ok but amongst them are the problem ones? It may not be easy but having some tests done etc might help sort out the ones that are OK. It sounds like proteins and fats are OK for you so hopefully you can create a suitable diet and I'm sure others will offer suggestions.

What about vitamin D? I think I saw something the other year about brittle asthma and vitamin D deficiency. Have you had your vit D checked?

Lots of people are short of Vitamin D and it can make you feel absolutely awful. Worth getting it checked.
