Hi guys! After 10 years of having daiabetes, I'm now coming up to my 22nd birthday and thinking I finally need a kick up the backside!
I've started a new job 4 months ago and in that space I've worked up to being manager. It's a very demanding, busy and active job at a dog kennels, I had a great run with the diabetes but if I woke up with a good bf at 6.0, I would have 3 hypos through the day regardless of eating without doing insulin. But now I'm waking up with readings of 13.0 but if I don't leave them at that I'll have more hypos. I've been taking work hom with me and stay up late doing this but always have been a hard wofkr, generally putting work before myself but why now is it causing me problems? I don't feel my doctor is one to understand my side of the story!

Hi Eve

Well done on your new job and I expect it gives you plenty of exercise!

Are you Type 1? Sorry I can't give any specific help but welcome to the forum and you will get lots of useful help and advice here from people who truly understand x

hi Eve are you on a pump? they give much better control and flexibility :)

Thank you, overhead through a lot of the topics and I'm truly amazed by people's kind responses. Yes I am type 1 diabetes on a 1:5 ratio of novo rapid insulin.

No I'm self controlled on carb counting. My problem has always been 'guess work' and I obviously blame myself for not always getting the right dosage but at night I seem to do the correct dose, but the problem may lie as I eat very late, do insulin then I'm in bed so I don't always see that the medication has had it's effect correctly?

Hi. I assume you also have a Basal insulin and that is correctly balanced? Yes, it may help to have the last meal a bit earlier. Are you overweight? If so this can make getting the insulin dose right more difficult. If overweight, then do reduce the carbs. Work stress will make things more difficult and I hope that can be eased a bit.

I've been told to 'have a play' with my carb ratios but I though the base was maybe the place to start?! Anybody on here have reviews at lincoln county? I've just moved house and boston pilgrim would be my nearest now, just don't feel I'm getting the help from my consultant

Hi Eve

Your high Lantus dose could explain why you are getting hypos and don't want to correct. I'm familiar with the "trial and error" approach to basal-bolus as that's what I did for years. Do you have access to a structured carb counting course? With your change of job and activity pattern you need to review everything - basal dose(s) and timing(s), insulin:carb ratio, and correction ratio. As you say, start with the basal dose. If you are on a single Lantus dose and having hypos at a particular time of day you might also want to look at splitting the dose into twice daily. This is best done on conjuction with a health care team.
