Hello to everyone

I'm after a bit of advice really. My Mum (62) was diagnosed a few days ago with type 2. She's not surprised as her mother had it and so did her mother's mother. I started researching the condition for her and have discovered that I could be at high risk too (apart from the obvious genetic predisposition). I'm nearly 35 and although I take regular exercise (3 times weekly gym sessions and yoga), don't smoke and hardly drink, my diet could be better as I'm slightly overweight (my BMI is 25). I have also noted that recurrent yeast infections, itchy skin and frequent urination at night, all of which affect me most of the time, can be other signs of type 2. Add to this that I'm extremely tired, although I do have 2 preschoolers at home! I don't have blurred vision though or excessive thirst.

I have decided to go and get these symptoms checked by the GP to be safe as it is worrying me! I would be interested to hear any of your opinions about it, as I don't want the GP thinking I'm just another raving hyperchondriac!

Many thanks

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

You're doing the right thing, especially if you're concerned and given the family history.

Regards, Tubs.

Hey :)

Welcome to the forum, I think you answered your own questions, best to go to the GP and get it checked, and if it comes back that all is well, remember that you should look out for the signs in the future as it's in your family.

Good Luck, I hope all comes back well for you :)

Hi worrygirl
T2 is strongly genetic. I am the third in a direct line in my family

You're not a hypochondriac, you're being very sensible; if you are a diabetic, it's important that you receive treatment as soon as possible. Like Hana, I'm the third in a direct line to suffer from type 2.

Good for you for going for a check up! Sooner the possible diagnosis is cleared, better the long term outlook! I have strong diabetic family history so have been self pricking every 12-18 months and was diagnosed about 5 weeks ago. I didn't have the blurred vision or the thirst but night time weeing and itching with tiredness and recurrent urinary infections. I also know I haven't had diabetes very long due to the self testing so haven't developed any noticeable complications. And now with Metformin and new diet, feel like a new person!! And am losing weight nicely.

Worth looking for a history of cardiovascular disease in the family too.

I come from a long line (one side of the family only) riddled with what we currently call "metabolic syndrome", interspersed with actual diabetics. Everyone has some symptoms but only a few collect the full set.

Hi again

Thankyou all of you who've responded to my first post. You are all so lovely and supportive!

Went to GP today as had to see him about one of the children. Mentioned my concerns whilst there and he is sending me for blood tests on Monday. Am not as worried now, as even if it's not great news, I'm sure I'll be able to deal with it!

Thanks again for taking the trouble to respond to me.
