Help! Confusing information

My teenage son was diagnosed Type 1 a year ago. On low dose novorapid and levemir. No family history of diabetes. Latest letter from SDN states GAD/IA2 negative but HLA DR3 and DR4 positive. His HbA1c last December was 40. Some research we've done suggests that these results are unusual and SDN is seeking further advice re the Type of Diabetes he has. Has anyone had or come across similar results?
 
Hi cath, I'm no expert on this and I'm sure people will be along soon with advice but from my research I understand that HLA DR3 and DR4 are the most common when it comes to type 1 juvenile diabetes. The HLA Is like a coating or a protein that covers the cells in the body so that the immune system can tell them apart from foreign cells and therefore not attack them and destroy them. There is a problem with this HLA in type 1 diabetes and so the immune system doesn't recognise these cells and so attacks them...hence the diabetes. Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
 
Thanks Elaine, that's really helpful info. He's got his first appointment with a consultant coming so trying to arm ourselves with information so we ask the right questions.
