Hi
I dont know if anybody can help but here goes.
I have been the main carer for a diabetic dog for 3 years and have managed to keep her in very good health. She has never had a hypo or a hyper and her levels have stayed between 4 (her absolute lowest) and 10 (her absolute highest). On boxing day however a relation gave her a very high carb treat without checking first and since then she hasnt been well at all. She has suddenly lost all appetite and is very lacklustre, she has done nothing but sleep ever since and she is getting uncharaceristically bad tempered. Has anybody got any advice at all please as the local vets isnt open till midweek.
Thanks

Hi Ammi.
Welcome to the Forum.

We really are only a website for Human's although we may have members who have Diabetic pets. So personally I don't really have much of an answer for you. In a human it would be dealt with by making sure we had plenty of water and maybe some exercise to help reduce the levels. Testing would show if this was having an effect. Making sure those 'treats' aren't given in future has to be a priority.

In the circumstances I don't like to lose members but this website might be a better place for you as it deals with Canine and Feline Diabetes here in the UK.

By law, vets must provide a 24/7/365 service. If you dog is really sick, Call your local vet. If they don't do their own "out of hours" cover, then your call will be re-directed to a deputising service or similar. alternatively call your local RSPCA for advice. In some towns and cities, there's also the PDSA.

Speaking with a vet would be your best option, but I tend to agree with Ken (Cugila) that perhaps exercise and encouraging your dog to drink could be beneficial and hopefully bring her levels down.

diabetic cat - help needed

Hi,

My cat got diagnosed recently after starting to drink lots and lots of water, and peeing a lot.

Vet took his blood and said he has diabetes. Fair enough.
They then sold us some expensive hill plan diet food which is apparently good for the cat (i have some issue with this which i will come to in a moment)
they also gave us Caninsulin and told us to give 5units 2 times a day after his two meals.

Regarding the food, looking on the back, its still about 25% carbs, which means his blood sugar will be higher than if we gave him 90-100% meat instead. This seems a poor place to start.

As it is his insulin, doesnt seem to make him much better. After 2 weeks his fluctose test showed he was high, 23 i think she said. He has improved, but not much i dont think.

They told us to start giving him 6 units and come back for more tests in two weeks. After 10 days there is basically no difference.

They want to test him again, which i think is pointless as i can tell by his symptoms that he is still way too high.
They also suggested bringing him in for a series of tests throughout the day...

My wife and I dont work (wife about to give birth and i am disabled) so money is becoming a big issue in this now, so i want to avoid any unnecesary tests...

I am tempted to swap him to 90% meat, and no more than 10% carbs, and see if there is improvement, if not then ask to try a different type of insulin.

What advice can you give me?

Many thanks

We are a website for Diabetic Human's NOT animals although we may have members who have Diabetic pets who may be able to point you to somewhere that you will get advice.

Here is one place to start for now:

http://www.pet-diabetes.co.uk/diabetes- ... s-cats.asp

As others members in this thread have said, you should speak to your Vet about the treatment and management of Diabetes in animals.

Here is a result of an Internet search: Keywords: Diabetic Cat.

http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt= ... e_uk&rd=r2

There should be plenty of advice in at least one of the sites. Hope that helps.
