Help - have gained weight in last couple of days and don't know why?

Thanks - I weighed myself today and have gone down by 2lbs again so am in exactly same place as I was a week ago. Am going to try and weigh myself once a week only.

That's a good plan, but make sure you weigh yourself at the same time and in the same circumstances each time. Best time is between getting up in the morning and before breakfast.

I weigh myself every Saturday morning when I first get up. My weight is going down slowly but I'm OK with that. The other week I weighed myself on the Saturday morning and then again in the afternoon - my weight had gone up by 2 lbs from the morning - I haven't done it again!

Do you check your ketones? As I understand it, if you're producing ketones you're burning fat. If you're not producing ketones, you could try tweaking your diet - and as it's LCHF the easiest way is upping your fat intake. If you're producing ketones, then don't worry: this is probably just a blip, increased muscle mass or water retention as others have said.

I hope things get better very quickly.

Hi Kate,
What are ketones and how do I check them?
Thanksx

Ketones are what your body produces when it's burning fat. You check them by peeing on a stick. You can buy Ketostix over the counter at most chemists, or you can persuade your GP to prescribe them.

Warning: if you're eating plenty of carbs and calories and have high ketones, you're in danger of ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency. This is why HCPs get worried by them. Every six months at my diabetes clinic the nurse dips a stick in my pot of pee and says "Oh dear, I'll need to talk to the doctor". But if you're low-carb or low-cal they're just a sign you're burning fat, and thus a Good Thing.
