Hi,

I'm looking for ideas for portable food.

- I'm taking a party of school kids to Paris in July. We'll be gone four days and a lot of that time will be spent on a bus. I've been on school trips before and I'm not expecting great things from the food. I'm a T2 on a very low carb diet. Any ideas people can give me for very low/zero carb things that will survive four days without a fridge, would be gratefully received! Nuts are an obvious choice, but if I end up not being able to find anything else, I'm worried that I'll end up eating too many of them and my carb count will go up. It's not going to be fun sitting on a bus for long periods either, so I think I'm going to be best eating as little as possible with as few carbs as I can.

What have you eaten on long trips and how did it effect your blood sugar?

jellies in the little pots :). they arent chilled when you buy them so would be fine as a snack, not that that will sustain you for days but an idea, i also eat the atkins bars, people slate them but for me i love em and as long as i only eat 1 a day they dont gimme delhi belly and keep me not hungry for ages, and dont effect my bg hardly, sorry thats all i got :) have fun... personally id rather have my finger nails pull out than go on a trip with all those kids but heyho lol

Take salami sticks and tinned fish with you, also cheese, wrapped in bacofoil will stay fresh, cucumber, radishes, cherry tomatoes. I am sure you will be able to buy food in supermarkets during stop offs. Enjoy your trip.

Yes, Baby Bel cheeses survive reasonably well without a fridge as long as its not a heat wave (will the bus be air conditioned?). Remember that on day one, you probably can get away with refrigerated things, so I might decant some Greek yoghurt mixed with a few raspberries or blueberries into a lidded container for day 1 alongside some cold cuts of meat like salami or cooked chicken. Similarly, a salad will last ok for the first day. Make the dressing separately.

If you like olives, they're very good and don't need a fridge. Nuts, as you say - check the carbs as some are better than others. You could also try a little 85% chocolate. Of course in France hopefully you'll be able to buy some nice cheese fresh. Definitely be wary of Camembert though - it can really stink if its not refrigerated!

Type 2 on Metformin, diagnosed Jan 2013, ultra low carber, Hba1C at diagnosis 8% (11mmol), now between 4.5 and 5.5 mmol. 20kg lost so far :)

Hello Hornplayer .

Prepared chopped/sliced carrot, celery, pepper sticks in a sealed tupperware box.
Few almonds in a small box? Then you only have a few at a time?
Baked not fried crisps like morrisons NU range?
Plenty of bottled water to keep you rehydrated, BG levels lowered and flush kidney function well .
Apples are lowest with 'myself' as a take away fruit [but this 'is just me' ]
I love the new zealand 'Smitten Apples' at present
I chop/slice it later and eat half of one , saving other half wrapped in tin foil for later when needed !
Babybel cheese is good for travel with its waxy packaging .
Mini sized crustless quiche pre cut up and wrapped in tinfoil ?
All really depends on your own tastes and preference .
With our ideas you have the chance to pick n choose your options and favourites :D

Hope this can help you a bit .
Anna .

Will you have opportunities to visit the French Markets for some goodies? French Markets are generally very good for provisions.

Take a plug in 12v cool box and take what you want

Diagnosed type II 1998 2 x 80 mg Gliclazide, 4 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 100mg Sitagliptin

Thanks guys, loads of ideas there. Doesn't look like its going to be as tricky as I thought it would be.

- I know what you mean Andy! lol But these aren't little kids, or a random mix on a school French trip. It's a tour with a senior county ensemble. They're a fairly disciplined bunch. ( at least they are BEFORE the performance ;) ) the staff who are going are all musicians too. We're used to playing, working and spending time together, so it should be fun. - personally, I'm looking forward to watching expressions on faces, (- inc the 18yr old semi-pro rugby player,) when they get to meet Micky Mouse! - musicians! What can I say? We never grow up!
