Hello,

I really would love some advice on ketones if possible.. Recently I have been having bad pains in the abdomen and my right hand side kidney area.. My bloods have been running a little high, waking up on 16's and sitting around the 13-17 mark during the day (thats not every day can I just add).. I know this isn't good and I have been a little wrapped up with stress at the moment.. I have been testing for ketones and Im only getting plus 1's or traces which again, shouldn't account for the pain I'm in.. Granted it isnt every day, but today it's definately here and I'm suffering.. and feeling a little blue as a result.. I drink plenty of water to try and flush potential ketones out but can anyone offer any other advice to help??

I've been type 1 for 2 years so should know the answer but I'm stumped.. My nurse wasnt too concerned as the ketones weren't up in the purple colours.. If they were in the past could this have done damage which is causing this pain - ie making my body a bit more sensitive??

Any advice would really help me today!!

Thanks in advance,
Lou x

Hi Lou,

On their own, ketones pose no risk to health. They are simply your bodies means of generating its own fuel if other resources are scarce.
Ketones with high blood sugar are another thing entirely. This is a result of a chronic lack of insulin. There is plentiful fuel in your bloodstream, but too little insulin to dispose of it. If it's allowed to build up, your blood becomes acidic and very harmful indeed.
You have to get your bg down pronto. Any reading in double figures is far too high and will damage you via diabetic ketoacidosis and glycation.
It's not simply a case of using more insulin because high levels are also harmful. It sounds as if you need to look at your diet carefully and adjust things to get your bg down where it ought to be - around 5mmol/l. If you do this, you'll certainly feel a whole lot better.

All the best,

Cheers Lou.
Have a read of some of the dietary ideas elsewhere on the forum and take it from there.
Have a great weekend.
