Help - Lantus

Hi

I am a type 1 diabetic on Lantus and novorapid but i'm having problems with the lantus, as follows:

1. It hurts to inject it.
2. Everytime I do inject it, my skin comes up in this big lump which is sore and obviously very very uncomfortable and the pain lasts for a few hours into the morning time.
3. My blood sugars are all over the place.
4. I have put on a huge amount of weight, even though my diet hasn't changed and i'm still doing regular activity 7 DAYS A WEEK. (I have a horse and I walk to work every single day).
5. My arms and legs are sore which is where I inject it.

I have an outpatient appointment tomorrow at the diabetic clinic and I am asking to be taken off it. Taking 4 injections a day is hard enough without the hassle of this lantus. Ive been on it for 7 years, all was ok up until about a year or so ago and i've just perservered with it but i've had enough now.

What are the other alternatives to Lantus?? Please tell me there is some other long acting insulin I can be put on. I really need off this lantus before I go insane.

Any and all advice welcome, thank you.

Sam xx

There are alternatives - mainly Levemir (long acting analogue, usually needs to be taken twice daily) but other treatments might be considered (NPH, various mixes - since you mentioned the hassle of multiple injections - or pump with fast-acting insulin).

Hi. Samantha jo ...
Lanctus is acidic based and can sting a bit!
Sounds like you are getting lipis in your injection sites.
Lanctus plus bolus shots can cause weight gain with some users.
Explain ALL of this at your appt tomorrow and ask for an alternative - levemir basal analogue ?
Lanctus can be successful for some , but as you have been on it 7years and its giving you areas of concern its wiser to discuss this with your HCP

I hated being on Lantus towards the end. It made me feel very ill and gave me rotten control with lots of night time Hypo's. Levemir is fantastic , I wish I had changed years ago

I have read the Levemir will help you lose weight, Lantus puts it on for a lot of people I have spoken to, so it may help with the weight loss alone to swap onto Levemir. I have never looked back and my control is so much more steady on it and no big drops through the floor, phew.

Go see your DSN and give it a go, you may find it helps you. Good luck :D

Hi , I have many problems with my blood sugars all over the place recently been taken off Metformin so was only havin insulin. I went to see my diabetic nurse at the hospital as things spiralled out of control after studying my control and i to was getting lumps after injecting, I changed to a 5mm needle and split the lantus does (2 injections of 39 units in different places) it seems to have worked my BM have come down. The lumps are insulin pools that don't absorb quickly and makes your body think it hasn't had enough insulin, the other thing that was suggested is not to draw the needle out to quick after injecting, it worth a try or suggesting it to your dr it seems to be working for me. Good luck

Brilliant news!! I have just come back from outpatient appointment. I discussed all my problems with the Consultant and he has changed me to Levemir - i'm so pleased!

I have a letter to give to my GP so will hopefully have the prescription on Thursday. I have to wait to next week before taking it, he wants me to see the Diabetic Nurse Specialist next Tuesday morning so she can give advice etc.

I was having big night time hypo's on Lantus and hit the deck a fair few times, so i'm pleased to be coming off it :). I tried splitting the lantus doses before but I had a serious hypo and ended up in hospital so they stopped that fairly sharply!

My Hba1c was 7.2. He would like it a bit lower but overall he seemed to be happy enough.

Thank you for all the advice!
