Hi,

Diagnosed back in 1997 and now I am starting Bolus injections and I feel like I am learning a new science. My name is Tim Clark and I am happy to find a place to be part of a discussion. I am 45 and have been dealing with this disease for a long time. I am constantly being asked to try a new drug or insulin and I have a great doctor. Just not able to have someone give me better direct advice. Hope to be a helpful member of the group.

Hi Tim and welcome to the forum.
If you're currently looking for some help or advice, it would be useful to post some more specific information. For example, your diabetes type, current medication, the diet you follow and any information of the particular issues you're having at the moment. I've found the wonderful souls on here really helpful when I've asked for help or advice.
If you're simply intending to introduce yourself then hiya!
There's loads of information on this site - have a good old delve around.

Hi and welcome. I'm surprised you have only recently added a Bolus insulin? Most T1s would need that very early on to provide good control. Why would the GP offer a new drug when you are already on one insulin; strange but I don't know your full history of course. What is your current conrol like e.g. HBa1C. What is your BMI and what sort of diet are you having?

Can you tell us a bit about the therapy you were on prior to this happening and whether you see a diabetic hospital clinic?

the OP has posted this topic as well http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/bolus-advice-please.86733/
which is relevant.

Hi Tim
it sounds from reading the other post you `have massive insulin resistance.
You really should ask the doctor that prescribed the Apidra for his recommendation on a starting point for insulin to carb ratio.

You also NEED a good supply of strips to be using a fast acting insulin like apidra.
You could be in a lot of danger without the ability to test if taking this insulin.

Thanks all. I started in 1997 with just diet then adding oral and I am a type 2. Over time could not control levels so added Dimicron to Metformin and that helped for a few years. Then added Lantus about two years ago as doctor said body can only remain on drugs for so long before resistance builds. I started Apidra a week ago to try and bring levels down around eating times. So far I have been successful but test 5 times every day and this means a massive number of strips in a month and also lots of needles. I am not correcting if high between meals so counting carbs and using 3 carbs per unit of Apidra right now and watching the stuff I eat. Just not sure but it stands to reason to me that this will mean and carbs consumed need a needle to counter act it. I eat snacks and meals so that makes five needles each day minimum. I have been helped by diabetes education at our hospital but Not able to get in right this minute for advice on how to find my resistance factor and ratio of carbs to insulin etc. So just asking for experience. Thanks again.

Have you or are you eating Low carb High Fat ? or following the nice guide lines eat well plate ? .. no reason for asking ..just interested

I eat a normal diet cutting as many carbs as possible but still eat a variety. I substitute snacks low in carbs like 1/3 cup walnuts to avoid as much carbs as I can. I do not worry too much about fat except I don't go looking to add it. I don't choose low fat cheese as I cut other things and I don't drink a lot of milk. I do eat a lot of fish turkey chicken and avoid most processed meat and very small amounts of red meat. I guess I don't want to be too drastic as I am already taking insulin I would rather take enough to cover the food and make it enjoyable. I do not eat much white potato corn and the high carb veggies. I guess I would say balance. I don't drink a lot of soda pop occasionally diet as I do like it but I drink a lot of tea and I don't add sweeteners just a bit of 1 % milk.
