Hi and welcome to the forum, corticosteroids are well known for raising blood glucose (gb) levels, I was on them long term before being diagnosed with T.2 diabetes.

When you see your doctor tomorrow he/she will no doubt prescribe medication to help get your levels down, you can help these drugs by cutting back on your consumption of carbohydrates especially those in things like Potato, bread, rice and pasta.

All carbohydrates turn to sugar (glucose) in our stomachs and that glucose then enters our blood streams via the intestines. Steroids cause high insulin resistance so your bodies own insulin wont be able to utilise the glucose in your blood which is why your levels have risen.

High glucose levels will be the cause of your tiredness and should recede as your levels start to drop again and as this happens you should start to feel your old self again.

It may be helpful for you to read the information given here to newly diagnosed diabetics even though you may not diabetic, fingers crossed :D . You will find that information here, just click this link = viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17088

Good luck at the docs tomorrow and I hope all goes well, and try not to worry too much before hand :D

no im on my own dr said last night if I feel worse or cant cope then to call before tomorrow but don't want to waste there time as im sure its the steroids which I have been told about already but because my asthma peak flow is still a little low I might the steroids longer so that's why im scared. scared of not knowing on what to do for the best x

What ever you do teddybear dont stop the steroids unless your doctor tells you you should, asthma can kill you but a few days or weeks of high blood sugars wont.

You just have to accept that you need the steroids for your respiratory problems and they will raise you blood sugars but your doctor can counter the actions of the steroid with suitable medication to help reduce your sugar levels.

Have you been taking steroids for a long time or just a short course for a week or two? If it is just a short course then your blood sugars should start falling naturally after you finish the course but it could take a week or two.

If you have been taking steroids long term and dont feel happy with what your doctor has done for you, you are entitled to ask for a referral to an Endocrinologist who have specialist knowledge of steroids and high blood sugars (diabetes) as both of these things come within their specialist area but that shouldnt be necessary if you are only taking steroids for short periods after asthma attacks.

And try not to worry :)
