Help me understand !! Can and Can't Eat

I have been trying to go Low Carb for about 2 weeks now and can say that I have had some success.
I am Type 2 with meds and have a morning test of about 5.5
Now I don't buy any food without looking at the Carb label on the back, no label, no buy !!

What I'd like to understand is the Carb content in relation to Sugar content.

If you look at some labels, it will say:
Carbohydrate content 65g/100g
of which sugar 35g/100g

Then you get some like:
Carbohydrate content 65g/100g
of which sugar 65g/100g

Which one would be better for me?

What carb count shouldn't I eat above, some say don't eat anything above 10g/100g

What about these foods that I'm not sure about?

Chapatti's
Wraps
Baked Beans
Custard
Tinned Sweetcorn
Chick Pea CUrry
Coconut and Orange Juice
Grapefruit Tinned
Chocolate bar 90% Cocoa

Any advice will be welcome to try and stay on the path.

Bob.

Hi Bob, just thought I would give you my response to your query as no one else has come to your aid as yet. I am sure a more knowledgeable member will be along soon.

As a rule of thumb I try not to eat any thing with a carb content above the 10 per 100 ratio unless the quantity I am going to use is very very small. I totally ignore the sugar content as all the carbs will be converted to sugars once I have eaten them anyway.

As for the list. I personally would only eat the eat e 90% Chocolate as it has a very high fat to carb ratio and even then I would only eat a couple of squares max. All the other items in the list I avoid as they all contain too many carbs.

Personally as I also low carb then it makes sense to me to be able to use my carb allowance on food that gives me more for my money, so to speak, I would rather have a large plateful of lovely low carb vegetables rather than one chapati. However if you really want to eat any of these items then the best bet is to try a small portion and see what effect they have on your blood sugar levels.

Thanks for quick reply,

I have grown up eating Chapatti's and it's a bit awkward to give them up during dinner, but i'm trying my hardest, with all the rest of the family staring at me doesn't help.

The rest of your comments I've taken on board too, cheers.

All the items on that list were some of my favourites.

If chapattis are something that you really want to keep in your diet then maybe now is the time to see if you could experiment and maybe find a way to alter how they are made. May be they could be made with half plain flour and half Almond flour as this would lower their carb content.

Other than that take a smaller portion and then test.

I can't eat any bread at all as it sends my levels sky high but I know that some members can tolerate a couple of slices, so, it's a matter of test and see. It always seems a shame when something we love to eat has to become a once in a while treat. :(

You might get away with 1 chappati as long as you keep the rest of your food during the day low. I can manage a chappati now and again - curry wouldnt be the same without them.
