Type 1 Help my BG won't go down!

Hi,

My BG has been around 17-20 for the last 24 hours and is now slowly going up, it's at 24.6 at the moment.

I keep taking insulin to correct,I haven't eaten carbs since this morning when I had some toast ( thought it was an overnight/morning high and I was expecting it to go down afterwards)

I have an insulin pump and I have changed the cannula, line and insulin vial. I have no leaks or air bubbles. I don't understand what is going on.

I don't think I'm ill, I feel ok and I haven't taken any tablets or anything unusual.

What should I do now? I'm scared to keep correcting in case it suddenly starts to crash and then I have a horrible hypo.

Any advice welcome!!

Have you tested for ketones? When did you last do a correction?

As your BS is going up I'd phone your DSN for advice.
 
I'm at work and don't have any way of testing for ketones. The nurses don't answer the phone in the afternoon, you can only leave a message on the answer machine I will try and get hold of them tho.

When I have highs like that I use my pen to correct.

Also, with a BS over approx 13, you'll probably need higher correction doses due to the insulin resistance that high sugars can cause.
 
I'd also try another new cannula. It's not impossible to have two 'bad' ones in a row.

Ok. I might have to see if I can go home as I only have one spare cannula at work and I just used that.

Even if I need higher correction doses at high bg's shouldn't I see it coming down a little bit?
 
I would definitely be taking at least 1.5 x as much insulin to come down from something that high.

And would stop relying on the pump if possible which is why I have some small syringes which I carry around with me just in case (like these https://www.bd.com/en-us/offerings/...bd-insulin-syringe-with-ultra-fine-6mm-needle) as they take up much less space than a pen and I can suck the insulin out of a pump cartridge.

If your nurse is not available, can you contact the pump manufacturer? They may be able to help identify any problems with the pump.
 
@Nomi Going home is a good idea. You need to be able to concentrate on sorting this.

Correct with a pen not the pump. Also, change your cannula and check all pump connections, etc.

IVe had rising BS due to poor absorption at my site. It took me most of the day to get my BS down.
 
Just wanted to add that it may be worthwhile changing your insulin in case this has gone off as well, wouldn't hurt to try a new bottle. Good luck hope you get this sorted soon.

Thanks all. I'm not sure what I did but it seems to be going down now. I changed everything so something obviously wasn't working properly.

really pleased for you @Nomi
it is a real pain when you can't get good BG's , it makes you question your own judgement !!!
