Help needed - Muscle loss

Does anyone know what I can do - I had an operation on my foot (ulcer) last July which - basically the sole of my foot was sliced off but unfortunately this did not heel very well and in November I had to have my toe amputated - this resulted in me not being able to walk anywhere as I had to have my legs elevated for 6 months and this has caused a tremendous weekness in my klegs - they wern't that great in the first place.

I have no strength whatsoever and cannot do any type of stairs or step off pavements. The toe has not yet fully closed up so I cannot put too much pressure on my feet. It had almost closed up about 4 months ago and I got an infection and the wound completely opened up.

Does anyone know of any devices that would help me gain more strength in my legs. I plan on going to the States next year for my 50th and I want to at least do some sightseeing on my feet.

Please help.

hi sue

Welcome to the forum, really sorry to hear of the bad times you've been having.

I can't actually offer any useful advice, just wanted to say Hi and bump you up so someone with more experience will see the post.

A good thing I see from you is your plans to go to America - plans are always good

Hi .My partner has back and knee problems which mean she can onle walk about 100m at any one time, She is using a pilates machine to build up her leg strength. The equipment can be used for all muscle groups , and is low impact.

Try looking on pilates uk website, they have a list of trainers by county.
It's worth watching QVC, they sell the machine, and have programmes that show the use of the equipment.
Your doctor or physio may have a list of local trainers also.

Hope this helps. and hope you get well soon.

Sorry to hear that - hope we can help, or at least encourage you.
Have you been offered physiotherapy - if not , ask.
A rowing machine might help as you are in control of the exercise - if your put most of your push on the other leg, you will still get movement in the bad leg, & gradually increase the push on it.
Your HbA1c is high, & steps to reducing it will help heal. Reducing carbs is a useful step. You will find plenty of diet advice on the forum. It makes a difference - I was becoming crippled with leg muscle pains, & low carb restored my health.

Thank you all for your help - much appreciated. I will look into the Pilates because I know nothing about that but the rowing machine at the moment is a no go as it is low to the ground and I do not have the strength to get up on my own. Unfortunately because I have been off my feet for a while I have not been able to exercise and unfortunately have a lot of water retention which is being sorted out but over the last year I have put on a cuple of stone and believe me they and more I hope will be coming off as soon as I get the okay to start all this exercise. My doctor did say that once the foot has healed she will refer me to a physiotherapist which will help I know. But thank you all it is nice to get other opinions.

Sue - welcome to the forum.

I am sorry you have been having such a rough time, good that you have a nice holiday to look forward to.
You have not been exercising for some time, start off gently, have you got Thera-bands?? You can do these exercises whilst lying on top of your bed if you like.

As Ian already said, tight bg control is vital, it will help to speed up the healing process.

Hope all works out for you x

I have a little book called Rosie's Armchair Exercises by Rosita Evans. Available from Amazon and good bookshops everywhere!

I find it helps. Also pointing a raised toe and rotating 30x clockwise, 30x anticlockwise and 30x up-and-down. Exercises a lot of muscles and will also help your circulation and help to shift the fluid on your legs.

Good luck! Just focus on America
