Help needed on weight gain

im type 2 and on metformin and gliclazide. And weigh 210 pounds and I sm very unactive so I need to lose a lot of weight so I started walking doing 3 mile walk every morning for the last 4 days I went on the scales and found out in the last 4 days I've gained 4 pounds can anyone help me understand why I'm gaining weight since I started exercising instead of losing any is this natural as I am and on the border of thinking why bother when I'm gaining weight and ready to throw the towel in

Morning.

It's highly unlikely that your walking is contributing to your weight gain. Exercise can cause weight gain if you are building muscle, but not that quickly. And walking probably wouldn't build much muscle.

How is your diet?
Do you weigh yourself first thing in the morning?

Try to avoid weighing yourself daily, it's common for weight to fluctuate up and down. If you way yourself once per week you'll get a better picture of what's happening and will avoid getting disheartened by thinking you're putting weight on when you're probably not. Things like water intake and meals eaten have a lot to answer for if you're on the scales everyday.

I lost a stone and usually weigh myself once a week but for some reason I thought since I've walked the last 4 days I will check and found out I gained 4 pounds in the 4 days I've been walking

Have you found an increase in appetite since starting your walks or have you been drinking more fluids?

Hi. Exercise can increase muscle which weighs more than fat. Diet if more important than exercise when it comes to losing weight, but both are important. Are you having a diet low in carbs but with good levels of protein and fat?
 
One problem you have is that you're taking gliclazide (a drug in a group of drugs known as sulphonylureas). This drug makes your body produce more insulin. More insulin in the body means greater insulin resistance and much greater risk of weight gain.

Whilst none of us here should advise you to stop taking these, there is another option.

Switching to a low carb diet is significantly more effective than exercise at lowering blood sugar levels and bringing weight down. If you've started a low carb diet recently, give it a bit of time for the benefits to kick in.

However, low carb + gliclazide can cause too low blood sugar (hypos).

Basically your doctor needs to work with you on this.

Personally I'd drop the sulphonylureas and start the low carb diet. Sugar levels will start off high but will start to come down once the diet kicks in. A well-followed low-carb diet has a fairly quick effect in lowering blood glucose levels.

This is what I'd do but this is not advice. The advice is talk to your doctor about this.

Hi @Kimmy22 Walking is good for you, but it isn't going to make you lose weight. Exercise might help with weight loss if you were running a Marathon every day, or spending 12 hours a day in the gym.
I walk an average of 10m a day, but I don't lose weight as a result. It's the diet that has reduced my weight - cutting down on portions, and sugar and carbs.
When I started my weight could fluctuate by up to 4lbs in a week, so I wouldn't worry about being 4lbs heavier. You might find you are down 4lbs again over the next few days.
My weight has levelled out now at around 10st, but can still fluctuate by up to 2lbs either side of that.
You were considering LCHF a few weeks ago. Did you start doing it? You will probably lose more weight with an LCHF approach to eating.
 
Thank you no I havnt tryed the low carb diet as yet I couldn't really understand it. When I looked so I have just been cutting down my foods and watching what I eat

Keep at it, walking is really good for you. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to see results. I find my body works on a 2 week cycle. For example if I am really good (or really bad :oops:) during one week it wont actually show on the scales until the following week. The more you do, the better you will feel and the more 'energetic' you will become, which will help burn the calories.

Hi. You really need to look at the low-carb diet. That means reducing bread, potatoes, pasta, cereals, sugar and so on. Look at the labels on the rear of food packs for 'Total carbohydrates'. Don't worry about proteins and fats. I agree with @alaska about Gliclazide. It is only useful when your pancreas is fading and T2s more commonly have too much insulin already, rather than too little, but can't use it. GPs don't always understand how it works (sad!). So, focus on the low-carb diet, keep going with the Metformin and when your weight goes down thru low-carbing discuss stopping the Gliclazide with the GP.
 
Great I will look again what if the daily amount of carbs for the low carb diet
