Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with Type 2 a couple of years ago as was my husband and my readings have stayed around 5.5. Just got back from the doctors after another blood test and my reading has gone up to 9.5!!! Shock.

I only have one coffee a day and do t drink tea and I haven't had sugar in drinks for over 45 years BUT I drink orange juice, Diet Coke and sugar free orange and lemon. He said to cut out the Diet Coke but also bread as that has sugar too. What can I eat and drink, I don't drink alcohol and have never smoked.

We have a good diet and do t eat processed foods or takeaways and I have been dieting for years. I am disabled with osteo arthritis, Ménière's decease and gout and various other health problems.

I am now taking 40mg Gliclazide daily.

Could you give us an idea of a typical days food? It's not so much about the sugar...as the carbs...quite likely that orange juice would be raising your BG,

Hi. The bloods reading of 9.5. Was that the HBA1C blood test reading or the fasting test number? Yes, all carbs matter not just sugar. Diet Coke is fine. Basically cut down on any food that contains carbs and have more protein and fat as needed to keep you feeling full. Veg of course is fine and so are most fruits.

Whatever you were doing for the last two years was working for you if your levels were down in the 5's so have you changed anything recently been unwell or changed any medication for your osteoarthritis any little thing can mess with your levels

Even pure orange juice is not a good choice all of the sugar of an orange but no fibre, worse the sugar is fructose which is not good news for diabetics. Fibre is important it helps reduce the impact on your blood glucose level of sugars and starchy carbohydrates.
If you do eat fruit stick to non-tropical fruit and berries and avoid fruit juice.
Diet Coke, Pepsi and other diet drinks are Ok but don't be taken in by "No Added Sugar" labels on fruit juices as "natural sugar" is just a marketing name.
