I was diagnosed about a week ago and my life has just seemed to have been turned upside down. It was such a shock as I am not overweight and exercise frequently. I am 50 years old and find the whole diagnosis terrifying and I am now full of anxiety about it. Please tell me this will settle down and my feelings will get better as it really is taking a big toll on my mental wellbeing

Hi @fetlar14

Mate this will settle down and your feelings will settle down. It is a shock but there is so much you can do about it. There are people on here who have reversed there Type 2 and others who have complete control and no meds etc.

You have already had a huge win by posting on this site. Here I have had so help and advice all I had to do was ask.

So read the info you will recieve from Daisy1 and have a look at the forums and post your questions.

Also you definitely need to get a meter to measure you levels as this is the no.1 tool in your armory and the language we all speak in on here

Welcome Aboard

Hello and welcome @fetlar14. I remember feeling exactly the same when I was diagnosed a couple of years ago. There is a myth that you have to be overweight and have a sedentary lifestyle to have diabetes that is constantly perpetuated in the media. You will get over the shock before too long and then, hopefully, start feeling positive about what you can do to control diabetes. This forum is a great way to learn and keep motivated and find what works for you. There is so much to take in that it makes your head spin to start with, but over time things begin to "click" and your sense of wellbeing will return. The good thing is you will start to feel better almost immediately when you cut out all sugar and lower your carbohydrate intake. Hope this helps - keep posting and let us know how you progress.

Hello and welcome.
I know just what you mean,I felt just the same,Its a shock.that was three years ago,I got all my advice from the forum and lovely people here.
Try and relax and read the posts and look into what you are eating.
Im not over weight either,Its not just overweight people that suffer,as we are lead to believe.
All the best, ask any questions you need to,there is always someone to help.

Yes the initial diagnosis is shocking and the possible complications with uncontrolled condition are grim.

But many here have found that relearning and understanding the impact of carbs is the key to normalization for T2D.

Hi, @fetlar14 -welcome to the forum!
Three weeks ago I was exactly where you are - just diagnosed, in shock, and terrified. Then I found this site, got myself a meter so that I could check my own blood sugar levels, and started the low carb diet that everyone talks about on here. Now my levels have dropped and been pretty stable over the past week.
Before my diagnosis I felt terrible and was very depressed, without knowing why. Now the depression has lifted, I've lost 10lbs and I feel great - I have so much more energy and I'm rediscovering my zest for life. All that in 3 weeks!
My GP wanted to start me on Metformin straight away, but I have resisted that so far. I suppose it depends on what one's levels are, but he grudgingly agreed to let me try to get control of this with diet and exercise alone, and we'll have a review in 3 months' time. Fingers crossed...
So, I'm sorry for delivering War & Peace, but I wanted you to know you have definitely come to the right place. I knew virtually nothing about diabetes 3 weeks ago, but I'm learning fast now. And if I can do it, you certainly can - I'm 63 in a couple of weeks, overweight since I grew teeth, totally addicted to chocolate, and have a very sedentary lifestyle.
Read all you can - both on this site and wherever else you can find useful information, reach out and take the help and good advice that's freely offered on here, and enjoy regaining control over your health and your life!
:-)

Welcome...
It's a terrible shock to be diagnosed, we all understand the anxiety you are feeling. There's so much to take in, I am only three months diagnosed, made a few mistakes with foods, but you learn what spikes your bg and move on.. Everyone'a different, what works for one might not be suitable for another, it's been trial and error for me anyhow. The best advice to start you off is read, read, read. There's a mountain of information on this forum. I sincerely hope that you soon feel that you're getting your bg under control. You'll find there are lots of very helpful and informative folk here that will support you, probably more than your gp, well, that's how it is for me. Best wishes
